Question Stock different broke, new OEM Diff is Different!

I dont know if anybody knows this, but it seems that infiniti has redesigned the diff for the 6spd. each year it has been released. My 08 6spd diff broke, along side with driver axle, and the new diff is soo diff, that my gtspec bar didnt fit anymore. Any ideas on what they changed, other than it look like it has heat sink built into now?

Hmmm, that's interesting. I just got a 2011 6MT coupe last month and I didn't notice that. I'll definitely check it out to see if there are any differences.

Hey Viper, I just took a look at my diff and I didn't notice a heat sink. It looks just like the diff that was on my '08, but I could be wrong.

Nismo makes a finned rear differential cover that should fit ours, but stock units don't have the fins. At least I'm pretty sure they don't. I font think it's changed at all since '08.

That is very different. And it's not the Nismo finned cover I was referring to.

I don't think that's right. On your '08 you should have gotten one like the one that was there before. Did you go to the dealership and that's the part they replaced yours with?

hm...interesting thread. i was under the impression that all the rear diffs weren't any different. the pumpkin swap i did with the '07 Z had an identical diff that fitted directly up into mine (same output shaft + both arms aligned perfectly).

When your axle broke did your diff break with it or did one cause the other to break? Im asking because i had an axle break on my car too and was worried if it messed up the diff at all

Yes the fins are for heat dissipation, that's all. So we've established that the '08 (I have one) has the regular smooth diff cover. The '10 that TVPostSound has comes with the finned cover I posted above in post #7 (it's also sold as an aftermarket Nismo part). And Viper has an '08 like me and his original cover was smooth but got replaced with the one shown in post #6. Interesting. I think I'm now officially lost.

DOes that mean you prefer "ribbed" instead of smooth??

Guys, there are TWO different finned parts here.
The one the OP posted is actually a factory Nissan finned diff case, not cover. The one BB posted is the Nismo aftermarket finned diff cover.
The fins on the finned diff case point downward towards the ground, the fins on the Nismo cover point towards the rear.

Here is a picture of mine. My car is a GCC spec 2008 G35 sedan. This is the stock diff case and we have them stock pre-installed from factory since the 07+ model V36 sedan and 08+ V36 coupe, as well as the 09+ Z34 370Z. The Nissan finned cases are installed on GCC spec cars to handle the extra ambient heat. I'm guessing Nissan is building all the new G's/Z's with these pre-installed

You can see the diff cover which is the silver part with the drain plug. Mine is not finned from factory (non of them are, only Nismo makes those and they are aftermarket only), so I can install a Nismo finned cover for additional cooling.
