Have an auto with paddles? The best $2 mod ever!

When I got my 7AT G37 coupe in December one of the first things I noticed was the heavy resistance and long travel of the paddle shifters. Now maybe Im spoiled coming from an E60 M5, whos SMG paddles were short travel, and required very little effort, but I feel these paddles on the G could use some improvement.

Well here is the fix ladies and gentlemen...$2 3M rubber bumpers! Stick these little suckers on the back of the paddles (right where the bumpers would make contact with the steering column plastic) and viola! Very little travel and almost no effort to upshift/downshift now. These basically take up the slack on the paddles and in turn reduce the "heavy" feeling and long travel. Give it a try...you'll love it! The tranny even seems more responsive (placebo obviously) because it seems to have a more immediate feeling to the paddle selection. You can even file down the bumpers a bit if you want a bit more travel.

These are what I used, they are .14" thick --> Shop 3M: 3M Self-Stick Rubber Pads, 751ES, Clear

Installed...one on each side...

That's pretty nifty. I use the paddles every time I drive with 'em.

Interesting mod. The long travel doesn't really bother me but worth a shot.

Pretty good idea. Hopefully they don't get loose, fall into the column and start rattling

All non "S" model are wired. A DIY link is in this post:

Nah, if you look back there there is not enough room for anything to fall into the column...and even if there was its a soft little rubber piece, its not going to rattle.

So Ive been rolling with these bumpers for a few days and I'm loving em! You have to barely tap the paddles now, it makes you 'think' the tranny responds much faster than before. If anyone has used the BMW SMG/DCT paddle setup, this makes it feel very similar. I may throw a little super glue on the back just to be sure they stay put.

I encourage everyone with paddles to give this a try, its so cheap and makes quite a difference, cant really go wrong.

Very interesting. So no long term adverse effects? Good idea.
