Throwout Bearing - Warranty

I literally just picked up a '08 G37 Coupe 6MT with 20K miles. I noticed I have a whining noise while in neutral, and also increases with speed as I'm driving in any gear.

The noise completely disappears when I push in the clutch pedal. I forget if thats the sign of a bad throwout bearing or input shaft bearing.

I made an appointment with Infiniti for tomorrow morning. Should this be considered a warranty repair? I certainly hope so.

It's really hard to say as 6MTs are noisey as fock.

Even the 370zs have the same problem.

I had the same noise. Ended up being a bad input shaft bearing and they just replaced the complete transmission under warranty.

So when you press in the clutch pedal and it disappears it's input bearing. Got it.

For you guys that had the tranny replaced, did they diagnose without pulling the tranny or do they put you through a waiting game for them to pull tranny, etc?

They just did a quick drive around with a tech, heard the noise, and I had a new tranny in 2 days later. I think it will all depend on your dealerships service department how smoothly it will go. It is a known issue though so it shouldn't be a problem.

The best way to find out where and why the noise is happening is by looking at your clutch components and flywheel. Based on the wear and tare of individual components will give you an idea of what is happening with your drivetrain/components. Noise can be from stripped splines on your input shaft, bad pilot bushing, torsion damper broken, misalignment between release bearing and your pressure plate, etc.

I just left the dealer a little bit ago. At first, the tech goes "Oh yeah, that noise is completely normal". This is before he listened to it first hand. After he listens to it, he tells me how it sounds a little worse than "normal", but Infiniti has a tough time warranting things like that because it's only a "noise" which is "subjective". I tell him that I know of a few people who had the same exact issue and there transmission was replaced. He say's "yeah, but it'll return after 20K miles". <------ Absolute idiot to even state something like this.

After arguing that there is no way in hell this noise is normal for a $40K car, I left with the idea that this was the beginning of a long process of going through Infiniti corporate, etc.

2 hours later I get a call that the transmission replacement has been approved and is on order.

My first dealing with Infiniti = extremely frustrating.

Go to another dealership for further service work. The tech shouldn't have said anything other than "I'll file a request for replacement" after telling you the sound was "worse than normal".

Here's how mine went during an oil change:

Me: hey, my trans is humming when the clutch is out.
Pat the head tech: ok let me check it out.
Ten minutes later
Pat: Your input shaft bearing is shot. I ordered you a new transmission. It should be here by Monday. You should schedule the appointment and reserve a loaner.
Me: for how long?
Pat: should be done by noon if you drop it off in the morning.

This is how it should be. Scary part is its these same idiots that will be dropping my tranny and putting in the new one.

not as easy is that. dealer said it was cheaper to replace my whole transmission in 2 hours then it would be to trouble shoot it for 6 hours. lol
