Tuner only got 5 hp gain

I have an aftermarket intake, high flow cats and CBE. Went to a tuner to get it tuned with Cobb AP, who has worked extensively with 350z and g35s. He said he worked with few 370/g37 cars and did Uprev tuning and Cobb is almost similar, and said he could get atleast 10 -15 hp gains but only got 5 hp.

Though he got some of the numbers in proper order, his experience with this VQ seems limited. Paid almost $400 for it, I feel like I got ripped off for some reason.

Is the car running smoother than before? 5HP gain isn't worth that 400 bucks.

Welcome to the forum btw and good luck with it.

Car was on Stock Style map of Cobb AP before and was running smooth but rich, so the tuner was able to run it leaner.
Whats the average hp gains with the mods I got and after tune.

he charged me 3 hours.

Staples just got his done with similar mods. Gained 30 whp and 20 lbs of torque, which are phenomenal gains. I'm not sure if this is typical though. He tuned with UpRev at JTran Studios in Houston. As they say, the tune is up to the skill of the tuner, so there are a few variables for you.

Staples used Cobb to get it tuned right.
Yah a tuner makes a difference thats why I went with Sasha with SG Motorsports in Toronto. He has a reputation with the previous VQs but not sure with the present ones. I went to him because I thought he had experience but still $400 down the drain.

What is your car, 5AT or 6MT? What conditions were you tuning in, hot humid etc.? Were you keeping track of all the engine temps?

The first time I got tuned we didn't make very good gains but we were dyno'ing in 4th instead of 3rd and the temps were getting really high (which the VQ37 DOES NOT like at all). The second time we did the pulls in 3rd and really watched the temps and got much better results, 10-15hp gains across the board.

Did you do a bone stock dyno? Then one with all the mods? Then one with all the mods plus tune? 5HP is not very good but if you already were up 20 without tune then overall you are looking pretty good.

BTW who was the tuner?

5AT, weather has been cold lately. Temps were ok I guess otherwise he would've mentioned it.

But I'm sure he shifted to 4th for the entire run. Wouldn't he know to keep it on 3rd instead if he done lot of tunes?

Not that I'm planning to get it tuned again, do you think the car should've gained more from the tuning in 4th if I did the dyno in 3rd? Sounds like a noob question, sorry.

On the 5AT atleast with uprev they were unable to remove the speed limiter so you can't get a complete run in 4th. Most people dyno the 5AT in 3rd anyway. The tuner might have though it was a 7AT. Mine did because the 370z he did was a 7AT so he just assumed all g37s were until I told him it wasn't.

what map did he use?

are you auto or m/t?

Mine was done in 5th.

If he used stock style v 102 instead of v103,because I had similar issue with only gaining very little using the v102.

Cobb with Stock style runs lean, that's the map we had used with just custom a/f adjustment.

I have almost exact same mods as you I gained 14whp from the stock map.

Reset your ecu & see if that helps, if not go back.

Tell him you have a "friend with same mods & he got 3x the gains"

It really is all about the tuner and it is pretty hard to determine exactly what they can really do without knowing someone who has used them for OUR cars not G35's or whatever. Not saying he doesn't know what he is doing but maybe he needs to just try a few more things or ask around himself to get up to speed. You should be getting better results for sure. I was able to get the rev limiter raised and the speed limiter gone so did all my dyno runs in 4th. Before JTran did my tune I asked several tuners about what they knew and what they could do. He was able to get big gains in a stock G earlier this year and had recently tuned one with the same mods I have and had great results as well. I would go back and let him know there are several people getting better results and see what he can work out with you. I used uprev and am very happy with the results.

he started with Stock Style as the base. he did baseline with all the mods and came around 280 I think, with the tune he was only able to get it upto 285.
He was using AccessTuner Race and he said he couldn't do live tuning !!! When I spoke to Cobb support about this, they said they never had this problem before but they're also looking into this.
As Harley suggested, he might have experience with g35/350 but he might be still learning on our engines. Kinda pissed though, given his name and reputation he could've been little upfront about this. I've mentioned about the gains on these boards but he thinks that i came in with good numbers thats why I didn't see too much gains. If he was experienced he could've said that within an hour of tuning but had to drag it for 4 hours plus my travel time to his garage.
I'm still waiting for dyno results myself.
