2010 w/6300 miles and a "Service Engine Soon" light

I've had 1 oil change on my 2010 Sedan (bought in May) and last night my "service engine soon" light came on. The cars only got 6300 miles on it, 1900 of them miles came during a 4 day road trip 2 weeks ago. I had the oil changed just prior to that and did check the oil today just as a safety measure.

I'll call the dealer tomorrow to schedule an app't. but in the meantime, what has been the experience of others who have had this light come on, especially this early in the game.

I've searched through other threads and have seen mention of this but nothing more than an EVAP leak in the gas cap seems to pop up.

more than likely you didnt tighten your gas cap, if you got gas last night. other than that, no way to tell unless you pull the code

+1

There's no point in guessing what's wrong without a code. Let us know how it goes at the dealer.

I had checked the gas cap and it was tight and I just filled up with gas but the SES light is still on. I'll make an app't at the dealer and report back with what the problem was for future reference to anyone else that experiences this.

Click your cap at least 5 times. Without a code though, there's no point in speculating. Good luck!

Engine service light came on before 1k miles. It was defective gas cap. If i were to guess, maybe gas cap issue.

Once the gas cap code is thrown it can take a while to clear. I had it for about a week the one time it happened to me. Just when I gave up and made an appointment it cleared on its' own.

you could go to western auto or auto zone & borrow(free) their code reader.

they atleast be able to give you the code...

Just a quick report on what the problem was. I took it into the dealer today and the report said: "ICE PORT found leak at the gas cap due to not tightening it properly causing leak".

What can I say. I've tightened the cap the same, turning at least 3-4 times for the past 4 months. They said in the future if that happens, tighten it and the SES light should reset itself after 100 miles or so.

Thanks for the helps everyone. Looks like most of you hit the nail on the head!

Did they find that after inspection or simply plug in the code reader? If the latter, wondering why can't the warning message simply states "Check gas cap" instead of "Service Engine Soon", and saving the owner from anxiety and trouble of going to dealer?

How are they going to make $ then?

^^jtla, I am guessing that they learned this from the code reader. I personally checked the gas cap before taking it in.

I'm with you on the "check gas cap" message. I mean, once the car is out of warranty, they're gonna start charging me for this stuff.
