Realistic gains with Tune vs no tune.
I have a 2010 G37xS sedan with Stillen Gen 3 intakes and cat back exhaust. I want to get a dyno tune with UpRev, but my local shop said that they typically can only get around 5-10HP gain on a stock engine. They also are pushing me a bit towards Cobb ,but I like the dynamic changing of maps with the cruise control button using UpRev.
Can I expect to see more of a gain than that because I have the increased air flow from the intake and exhaust? I want to justify paying for the tune. I assume I will get a better Air/Fuel ratio and therefore the car will run that much better. But not sure it is worth it for only 5HP. What have people seen for gains when baselining the intake/exhuast and then after the tune?
Thoughts?

Gains from NA mods on our cars in general are very minimal

Some things to consider:
1. Do you plan to have any more intake/engine/exhaust mods done in the near future?
2. Is your local shop pushing you towards Cobb because they are more comfortable/experienced with it over UpRev?
3. A tune may not make significant improvements to the max hp/tq numbers but may improve hp/tq in the low-mid RPM range which is more beneficial in my opinion.

1. Near Future, no. Couple of years...I plan on putting a supercharger on the car. It just only has 2500 miles on it, so not going to rush
2. They are pushing me to Cobb because they think it is much easier to use and perform the tune. If it weren't for the "Valet" mode option with UpRev, I wouldn't care. Until I get the Supercharger, I could live without it anyway
3. I agree...I'm just trying to understand how Cobb (for example) says its tune adds over 11% HP/Tq and my tuner is saying 5-10HP total, unless they are including adding the mods themselves.

They tell you that so you don't bananas & complain.
Mine told me the same thing i was told no more than 5.
I netted 14whp from my tune.
Im a coupe, but gains should be similar.
BTW I have hfc's stillen stage 3 intake & cobb tune.
You deffinatly need either test pipes or hfc's.

Well, the reason I haven't jumped on the HFC solution is I wasn't sure on an NA car, they would be a good thing. I know that on induction motors, they benefit from less air restriction on the exhaust, but NA cars need some restriction.

I say don't waste money on a tune until you get hfc. You may be taking more air in, but stock cats are choking your power on the way out. Take it from me and risky guy as we are both uprev tuned, I believe Sam is as well.
Uprev doesn't just creat more HP it stabalized a/f ratio and makes the car run much better with all the bolt ons. It also allows for a more stable power curve and created more lowend and midrange power, which is probably used most frequently. In my auto, it gave me a better throttle response and change the pedal at WOT to allow I htink 90% power, and stock I think it's like 75%ish or something, but don't quote me on that. I have to double check my dyno sheets but I think I netted 18WHP, which I was happy with and feel everytime I get on it. No more hesitation or delay, or sluggish off the line due to incorrect a/f ratio.
There's many benefits to a tune, including the switching of maps on the fly. I usually leave my tune map on all the time. And I'm finding under easy driving I'm getting better mpg than with the economy map.

yup, i gained 7whp and that was after I already had a CAI and cat back. Gains can be anywhere from 10-25whp depending on mods, fuel, conditions, etc. That gain of course is made throughout the powerband so it's definitely something that you will feel. I will be tuning my car soon using Uprev. My current AFR hovers around 14:1 and dips to about 13.5:1 over 7K rpm. I'll post my results when I get it done

actually have the cobb.
one of the best features is the valet mode I had to use it the other day.plus the anti theft maps,if you don't want your car started.and I agree 100% about the a/f ratio.
these cars quite the pain in the a$$,to adjust but the car is so much more responsive.
