6MT owners: is it possible to lug the engine without any throttle?

For example, let's say you are coming to a stop in 5th and you stay in that gear while braking until around 1200 RPM at which point you put it into neutral and finish... Would the fact that the RPM is so low be considered 'lugging'?

I thought the definition of lugging was when the RPM is too low when ACCELERATING? Would it still be considered 'lugging' in the above scenerio?

Yeah, that's not really lugging an engine by definition. It's probably more of a terminology difference (lugging, bogging, etc...) than anything else. But the point is that you need to have a relatively high load at low RPM to lug an engine.

If you're coming to a stop and forget to depress the clutch pedal, the engine will stall, but I wouldn't say it will lug before it stalls.

So is it still bad to have such a low RPM at a high gear when braking? Let's say you let it get down to 1200 RPM, not too close to the point at which it would stall

1200 RPM? No problems at all.... Now if you get down to idle RPM or lower, then the engine would start to stumble and eventually stall. Even so, you wouldn't hurt the engine by stalling it.

How do you get a running engine below idle RPM?

Easy. Leave it in gear and stop.

Don't think it's lugging unless you're gassing it in low RPM and high gear. Many people leave it in high gear and come to a an almost complete stop before putting it in N. Some down shift to help slowing it down. Others just put it in N then roll to a stop.

Betty must be an automatic for your to ask this.
It's easy, just forget your in gear and apply the brakes long enough. It can happen if your mind is not on what you are doing. I've done it but it is very, very rare for me to forget I need to shift or clutch.

Sure, I think everyone who has driven a manual for many years has done it at one time or another. I have on occasion when my head was elsewhere besides driving. I guess I've just never done it to the point where my RPM fell below the level of RPM at idle which is about 750-800 RPM in the 6MT version of this car. I suppose I never realized that the RPM would go that low without completely stalling out the car.
