The Cause:

When they put the oil filter on without lubing the gasket, the gasket was pulled out of the recess it sits in. After driving about 5 miles the oil pressure caused the gasket to pop out of its seat, causing all the oil to flow past the gasket and out of the engine. The oil came out in a matter of seconds, and by the time the oil light came on it was all ready to late and the engine was toast. About 400 yards back on the highway there was/is an oil pool around 8 feet long and the width of the undercarriage. The engine started to cease up and jumped a couple teeth on the timing gear which in turn smacked the pistons into the valves, thus making a $10,000 boat anchor. The new engine is in and now the task of breaking it in all over again begins. Not getting to put your foot down in this car for 1000 miles is real torture. I'm just really glad to have my G back. You don't know how much you miss something until it's gone.

I'm sorry to diverge.

I just wanted to clarify that you lube the gasket on the oil filter to make it easier to remove later on.

The most likely reason why the oil leaked out the filter was because it probably wasnt screwed on tight enough. I say this because I have done this/ seen this happen quite a bit, especially on engine where the filter is in awkward position.


just be careful not to make that mistake when you change your own oil

Now that I have a torque wrench I'll probably torque the filter to spec just to be **** about it. But the manual even says you can simply tighten it until you fell resistance, then tighten another 2/3 turn.
