5th and 6th gear

Going into 5th gear from 4th gear is very rough, should it be like that. Also if I shift from neurtral (coasting) to 6th gear like on the highway I heard a sharp grinding sounds about 10 percent of the time as if Im not pushing the clutch (even though i am pushing it all the way).

If you let the car idle down and have the engine at a much lower speed than the car you can get a grind. You let the synco's spool down. Shift right and it should be fine.

Why are you coasting in neutral on the highway? That is not safe.... especially at speeds of 55+mph. learn how to drive stick properly before you hurt yourself or someone else. Oh yea and that grinding sound you hear is your syncros getting torn up because you are trying to force it into gear without the right amount of revs.

I dont drive on the highway in neutral how would that work id have to go in and out of gear every few seconds but the point is when I am in neutral it does that even if I am switching between 5th and 6th, I think I describe it the wrong way. The point is I get a grind sound even when I am switching from 5th to 6th. Just shifting regularly.

... and should 5th gear be so rough. Every other gear is smooth.

5th and 6th are not as smooth as the first 4 gears because of the synchros used. As was posted, you really do need to keep the RPMs up when making those shifts. If you're shifting too slowly it will grind because the speed will be too slow.

You can shift when higher in the gear's RPM range to make sure your RPM is high enough to make the shift smoothly. Shift much quicker and it should be smoother. Or you can slightly blip the throttle between gears to get the RPM higher and it will go smoother.

Thanks. This car's gear box is more difficult to maneuver. In my old civic it was easier.

No doubt. I had a 92 Stanza that was almost impossible to grind a gear even if you tried and the softest easiest clutch ever, nothing like the G. It'll come easier with practice in the car. Don't be afraid to rev it higher and play around with it till you get the hang of it

Cars with no torque usually have easier, smoother clutches. They don't have to deal with the torque.
