What is ester Oil?
#16
I'm still not clear on whether Nissan or other "ester" oils are better than Mobil 1 for example. Mobil has a faq on oil and the question is asked about using Nissan "ester" oils on a G37 - Mobil responded that all of their synthetics contain ester oils in some quantity and that their analysis of Nissan ester oil did not show anything unique about it - and recommended their high mileage version of Mobil 1 for the G37. I think I will likely use the Nissan product and have the dealer do the change but it isn't clear to me that this product - apart from the manufacturer's claims - is distinct from the competition. I'd rather be on a more widely available oil though.

to the thread titled "THE difinitive oil thread" and read throught that it should give you some good insight and different opinions. In the end, all the high quality fully synthetic oils as well as ester oils are fine and you just have to get whatever oil makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside
IMHO Mobil1 or a comparable full synthetic is better than the ester oil simply because of the HUGE price difference. The ester oil is much more expensive for something that I can't see any benefit worth paying for.

FWIW in test on my350z, Mobil 1 is not one of the better rated oils in our VQ motor. People continue to run it. The 370Z and G37 motor is even more demanding on oil. I will continue to use Castrol GTX or Castrol Syntec in my 350Z and sons Xterra. I will probably do the first oil change with the Nissan ester based oil then switch to Redline 5W-30 synthetic for the G37. Redline is an ester based synthetic and can be bought for $8.95 per quart. I use K & N or Mobil 1 oil filters in all my cars.
