I actually never use the shifter because it is the opposite of any other car I owned. In the G you have to push up to goto the higher gear and down to goto a lower gear. My natural reaction is the opposite after having 4 cars being opposite of the G.

USE THE PADDLES!

Interesting. Anyways are there any gotchas with this car in regards to the shifter? Is down shifting a no no?

Ok heres a little secret, they put the paddle shifter and the manual shift mode there for looks, if you use it your car will self destruct.

J/K listen it's a car and it's fun to drive. I subscribe to driving a car the way its meant to be driven. these motors rev to 7500 and they are designed to take abuse. You have 4/60,000 mile warranty have fun drive it like you stole it. Just be safe and maintain the car properly.

I have a 1995 nissan 300zx tt, I have had it since new. Car has 110,000k miles on it. I drive the **** out of it and have never done anything but timming belt and routine replacement items. The car still drives perfect!

Point is drive it the way it's meant to be driven. You didnt buy a Camry did you?

The car will prevent you from over revving the engine or stalling it. There's not much you can do to damage it.

I played around with the sports shifter for the first couple of days but I just leave it in D now. I'll occasionally put it into DS if I'm bored but that's about it. The car can do a better job shifting then I ever could.

There's a DIY on how to reverse that. I remember it was relatively straight forward.

You can down shift all you want. Typically to get more power, in situations like passing. I don't believe the car will allow you to down shift into 1st though, not that you'd want to anyway.

I just can't get over the lag in the shifts, maybe a grounding kit can improve the timing.

When downshifting for passing, you can always slap the paddle, but if you want to use the gear lever, when you move it from D into DS, it'll automatically shift to 5th if you're at a higher gear. Thus, most of the time you'll want to slap it into DS then tap it down to get into 4th and blast by.

Oh, and yes you can downshift into 1st, problem is that 1st tops out around 20mph, so if you're going faster than that, it won't let you (due to over-revving).

Can someone explain to me the downshifting concept? If I wanted to blow by someone, I would downshift and then what?

I can only answer for non-sport sedan (as that's what I have), and yes, you would either have to upshift or push the lever into D.

I think on sport models, if you just downshift using the paddles it will revert back to D after a couple seconds. BUT DON'T QUOTE ME ON THIS! Someone who actually owns a sport should answer that.

I find myself using the paddles more and more. For a pass, drop it two gears and floor it then upshift as speed builds. I love down shifting with the paddles as well. Love the engine sound under deceleration.

However, if I need to go to DEFCON 5, go into DS mode and use the paddles. Then I keep it over 4 grad, downshift and brake in curves and upshift on the straights.

I am learning that the car is almost like Superman, mild mannered Clark Kent on the work commute, Superman in the canyons.

While in D mode, you can downshift using the paddles (it'll be in D[M] mode) and when you want to go back into D mode, just hold the up-shift paddle for about 2 seconds and it'll go back into D mode.

The car will also go back into D mode from the downshifts when you stop the car; i.e. downshift to a right turn on a red light.

I also noticed the car will go back into D mode after cruising in 2nd or 3rd gear for 3-4 seconds.
