There are a lot of factors that influence octane rating, cam profiles, combustion chamber design, timing, etc. All these thing influence the actual combustion of the air/fuel mixture and how the pressure of ignition is handled.
Thank you John.

In general just the opposite is true- the higher the rpm the less octane required.

(Sigh) Some posts here are as misguided as past threads on this often-repeated subject. Higher octane beyond what is required to prevent detonation is a complete waste of money, for higher octane in this range does not give you any more power or performance.

For those so inclined, you might as well open your window as you drive, throw out a dollar bill every few miles, and shout, “Veroom, veroom.”

In your case using 93 is preferred over the 89, because some performance may be lost as the ECU retards the timing to prevent knocking. However, if you want to take the trouble, you could combine both 93 and 89 when filling up to get close to 91, which is all you need.

I'm kind of stuck because my choices in Chicago are 93 and 89.... maybe I should do half and half to hit 91 and save?

Because those engines have much higher compression ratios than ours and need higher octane to prevent detonation. Where the G37 is around 10:1 a typical Ferrari is 12.5:1 or more.

compression is only one part of the equation.

You could make just as much power on lower octane reliably, if you were willing to spend the money on a Motec.

If you can't pay, don't play. Put in 91. Premium car, premium maintenance, premium fuel, and of course, premium price.
