RPM when cruising on the highway

I don't understand why they gear 6th like this in cars. Performance car or not, if you are in 6th your primary concern is probably gas milage and not acceleration. My 4 cylinder mazda revved lower on the highway they this car, kinda a shame because it seems the highway mileage could be a lot better.

used to bother me a bit too, but now I'm used to it. The engine is relatively smooth and quiet so its OK. Plus the exhaust note is better above 2k rpm. Be glad you're not in a Honda TSX--the one I test drove was at like 3k rpm at 55mph..

About 3k for 70mph on a 6MT is where I'm at as well. Gearing is very aggressive (as is the HR designation to our VQ engine) as others have already mentioned.
If you thought our gearing was aggressive, you should check out the ratios for a JDM-spec STi ... my buddy installed the JDM transmission on his boosted STi ... the thing is a rocket ... but a pig on gas and it loud as sin on the highway at cruising speeds.
PS My wife has a TSX ... and I find the 5th gear of the 5AT on the highway to be geared fairly well. I can easily obtain 35mpg on the highway in her car. (Heck, if I drive 50mph steady ... I hit can hit 40mpg)

completely normal, although yes i would like the rpms be lower while at freeway cruising speeds, it doesnt bother me when i do need to pass and not have to shift to do it, personal preference kinda thing

Glad to see this post. I have an older Maxima SE that runs considerably lower RPM at highway speeds and was considering making a post to say WTF. Both the Maxima and the G are AT and I had the same concerns as the OP. I would have assumed the top gear was meant for maximum MPG.
I guess it's normal....

On the one extended trip I've taken in the car, the best I ever did was maybe 24 mpg at 80 mph. Coming from an Acura TL 5 AT that easily got 32 - 34 mpg at 80 mph on the same run, I was a bit surprised; not disappointed, just surprised. My G isn't that much faster than the TL in every day driving.
Don't get me wrong, I love my car. I just wish it turned fewer mph on the highway and got a bit better mileage.
