[posted video] That is EXACTLY what my problem looks like, except the flare is often a little more RPM than that. Which TSB do they claim was applied? The older ITB09-032 or the newer <style type="text/css"> <!-- @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } --> </style> ITB10-075? Or both? I noticed that 09-032 seems to have disappeared off all sites, leading me to believe that 10-075 includes or replaces 09-032.


It is a good idea to try and capture video. I might try to to the same on mine, although it is so unpredictable it will be a great challenge.

That's a great capture, and it's not the TC unlock-lock-unlock "flutter" I've experienced. At least, I don't think so, have not had it happen while I had my eye on the tach. What does it feel like when it happens?

It seems as though the remark about 2010+ having a different issue than 2009 may be spot on.

If it were a manual transmission, it feels like someone pressed in the clutch a bit- slipping. The engine races a bit. It isn't violent and not noisy.... it is just annoying and distracting. When you throw in the occasional poor shift strategy and BAD shift (thunk), it makes one lose all confidence in the transmission. I never had ANY of these problems with my 2000 Maxima 5AT, which I drove for 9 years before buying the 37G. And I thought I was moving UP!

Right....it actually does feel like a split second lock then unlock then lock of the TC. The 7sp has a variable locking TC. I swear that's a source of so many of theses issues.

Hmm. I don't feel what maxtog describes, it's kind of a flutter that you can feel mostly in the accelerator foot, like the TC is doing unlock-lock several times very rapidly. I'll have to see if I can get an eye on the tach when it's happening. There's a 35-45 transition on my way home that produces it fairly regularly if I smooth up to 50 for the 45 zone and hit the cruise.

It feels very similar but not as severe as my last Legacy GT, which was about to go in for a TC replacement under warranty when I traded it. That would sometimes produce a resonance frequency that rumbled a bit and felt like a wheel bearing just starting to go bad.

Well, I will admit that my perception during the events is probably not terribly keen; I am always listening to music too. It is compounded by my lack of driving- since I live so close to work, I walk/scoot every day, so I drive only a few times a week. I have never been able to figure out how to reproduce the problem on demand, or near enough so I am prepared to give it my full attention when it happens.

I wish you would have captured the speedometer too so that we could see how fast you were accelerating and what speed your "flare" occurs. Quite frankly I don't see anything worth taking to a dealer. I don't accelerate that slow (based on sound).

The transmission in the G37 is an automatic that tries to give manual transmission performance. The torque converter is locked more than the "soft" shifting transmission in other cars and produces a rougher shift.

I have experienced the hard banging downshift a couple times, but only when the transmission is cold. After 5 min. I have never felt the rough banging downshift. This leads me to wonder if the transmission fluid is not working for this application. Has anyone tried a different transmission fluid?

People- when quoting, PLEASE trim the quote so you don't include the video over and over, at least!

Anyway, that was one of my original observations- it seems to flare more for me under light acceleration. And most of the time I do accelerate lightly (lots of traffic, better fuel economy).

His example is a flare of only about 200RPM. For me it is typically 250RPM but often higher- like 300, 350, and sometimes as high as 500RPM. I can't believe anyone would find it acceptable and not want to take it to a dealer. I have never been in a car that did this.

The flare happens to me no matter how fast or slow I accelerate. The key is that the transmission must be warm. When the car makes the shift the first time after starting the car, it flares. It does it only that one time until the car is once again started again.

I also do not think it worth complaining about. In fact the last time I had my car at the dealer, I told them to NOT do anything to my transmission. I had the first TSB applied back in 2009 when it came out and have been mostly pleased since then. I get some oddness out of the tranny every once in a while, but mostly it is fine.

I think this is what happens when you try to write a program to tell the car when to shift, rather than having the mechanical shifting like back in the day.

Maxpilot, the speedo doesn't matter. I was accelerating at maybe 40% throttle, thats why the shifts are around the 3K range.

I guess I've just learned to live with it since it only happens once per drive.

The whole 7SP is just a mess. And its not just my car. All the G37x loaners I've driven act the same way. They don't always smoothly come to a stop. The flare...etc. As a matter of fact here is what I've noticed.(you can tell I'm getting mad):

1. In manual mode, as you come to a stop, the 2-1 shift makes an AUDIBLE snap outside the car. I understand that if your in M mode and slowing to zero the car is more aggressive, and thats fine, but why the audible snap. Makes me feel like I'm breaking the tranny.

2. In DS mode, the aggressive down shifting with heavier braking under 25mph is stupid. The tach will jump from 1K to 2.5K in a split second but by then you're almost stopped. It just ends in the car being really jerky, not as smooth as you can do with the paddles.

3. The Flares - see video

4. The variable TC - cause for to many lock/unlock/half lock garbage

5. Not predictable behavior - Sometimes, in D mode, I can be at a dead steady 30mph and my rpm's are at 2K. Other times, I'm at 1100rpm. Difference, 1100 rpm is smooth and the car isn't wasting gas humming at 2K. Why? This a direct result of the car thinking I want sport because I just made a left or right turn on a city street. Thats not sport, thats life. If you come to a dead stop and then slowly accelerate she go from 1st to 5th or 6th by 30mph. I know that an auto can't read peoples mind but this car is auto is trying to be too smart.

I experience the hard banging downshift frequently when returning to my subdivision. The transition is a 55mph zone, stepping off into a right turn lane, and turning right into a 25 zone. I've almost always been driving for more than 5 minutes, and my daily commute home is about half an hour.

The 7at is a factory-sealed unit with no provision made for changing the fluid. There's not even a dipstick.

Of course the A/T fluid can be changed. It shows you how in the service manual.

Well, I'll be darned. I was going on what Infiniti Master Tech SteveTheTech said over on the NICO forums (and the fact that there's no tranny dipstick on my car).

Can you point to which FSM section that's in?

The FSM MA (maintenance) section for the '10 G37 sedan says:

"(2) Automatic transmission fluid is maintenance-free."
