Transmission whine on 6MT

For the past week I've noticed a loud "whining" sound on my car while in idle, which goes away when the clutch is depressed. however, once in gear and driving, the noise increases to the point where I can barely hear the exhaust with windowns down.

Finally took it in today and right away the service guy said it was the transmission, and he's dealt with this problem on 2 6MT coupes in the past month. They ended up replacing the entire trans on those 2 previous vehicles.

Dropped the car off at 8AM, and by 3PM I get a call from the service tech saying that Inifiniti decided NOT to replace the trans, and that the noise is due to normal wear and tear. He said the previous 2 transmissions they sent were not defective at all. Now, my car is less than year old with 17,000 miles on it, which are about 80% hwy miles. I baby this car as much as I can (mostly due to $4.30 gas prices) and never drop the clutch or drag it.

Has this happened to anyone else?

What a load of BS, you have a 6 year 70K powertrain warrenty. Ask them to show you in the warrenty where it says normal wear and tear resulting in a annoying whinning is not covered for warrenty repair. Surely this transmission does not comply with Infiniti standards, nobody would buy that car! Only exceptions I saw had to do with after market modifications or abuse.. and they gave you a golden ticket saying it's normal wear and tear.

i have a whine, and i actually like the way it sounds. mine has a slight whine (sounds like the belt whine from a blower) and it doesn't get that loud. from what they told you, it seems that the trans is functioning correctly. if it bothers you, go over their heads and complain to infiniti of north america.

p.s....my car only has 3800 miles, so i doubt its wear and tear.

edit: for those who don't have this, it is a mechanical buzz in idle. also, mine only has it in first gear when in motion, and it sound a little bit like manual cars driving in reverse.

^ You know what? I have the same whine when my Girl's in the car too... Is it coming from the passenger seat? For some reason mine tends to get really bad about one week out of the month though...

^hahah... wow.

I heard a whine too, but when I turn off the climate control it goes away so it'sa buzz of fans or motor running fans or something. Maybe you only hear it in first gear casue the engine masks the sound at higher speeds? Just a thought.

well it seems i'm not the only one. hopefully the trans is ok, but it just doesn't sound right to me. the only thing that kinda pissed me off was he said he had to replace trans in first 5 minutes, then calls back and says everything normal...seriously, he prob should have kept his mouth shut from the beginning.

guess i'll have to wait and see. its a lease anyways.

Just picked up a G37 6mt and have noticed the same whining noise that seems to be coming from the transmission. Wondered if anyone else is still noticing this same issue or if it really is just a normal thing that shouldn't be a problem. I haven't seen anywhere that definitively says. Want to be sure before I take it to the dealer to see what they say.

I have a crazy whine in mine. Took it to the dealership twice. They told me it was completely normal. I also have a sound coming from the rear end of my transmission when sitting at idle with my foot off the clutch. As soon as I push the clutch pedal in, it goes away.

They told me that it was the output shaft bearing and that the sound is normal on the coupes. Is that true?

I had a very similar whine coming from my 6MT transmission a few months back. I actually thought I was hearing my clutch slip (it would only whine while I was engaging and disengaging the clutch, but not with the clutch engaged or disengaged). At low RPM and during daily driving there was no whine, but when I was pushing it and winding up the RPMs, it would whine. After a few months, it just went away.

Yes, we all have that and it is what they told you it is. Whether it's "normal" or not is up for debate, but it is common on all G37 6MT.
