gears are too close?

Is there anyway to prevent going into the wrong gear? I think the gears are too close together in the gearbox.. sometimes when I go to 3rd to 4th I accidently go into 2nd... which is a nightmare. but is there anything that can prevent this? some kind of safety mod or something?

Ummm... Try moving the shifter straight back... Try not to shift too fast bro... Shouldn't need a safety mod IMO...

When you shift, let the shifter go into the proper gate.

If you are pulling down to hard, that is probably why you are hitting 2nd instead of 4th.

inbetween shifts you will notice if you shift slowly,it will pretty much line up on it's own. Pratice makes perfect.

Also practice when slowing down, taking out of gear from example 4th when slowing down you can put into neutral at like 100o rpm's without usuing the clutch.

That will help you get a felling for the gating in the trans.

Try driving a 2000 Celica GT-S, now those puppies were close. That reminds me of a story about some guy in that car who accidentally downshifted from 5th to 2nd doing ~75 on the freeway (6th gear was pretty useless in that car)...you can guess what happened after that.

Anyway, I never felt the shift gates in our car were too close. They're actually spaced out pretty well IMO. Are you a new MT driver?

But I AM curious what kind of safety features are built into our MT. Is it possible to shift to R while moving forward? Would pushing down on the shift **** allow you to do this? Or is there a secondary lockout mechanism to prevent this as well?

Yea, I am a new MT driver. I'm way better than since the first week I got my G. I shifted from 3rd to 2nd a couple days ago and almost wiped out. Nothing big tho... so I was just curious if there is anything to prevent that from happening again... not like I will do it often.

These gears are not bad, and the shifter should go right into the next gate without a problem.

To go from 3rd to 3nd you must have slammed it into gear because the gates lock up so you can go into the next gear easy.

Just pay a little bit more attention to specifically what direction you're pulling the shifter. Take it slow and eventually it'll become intuitive to you. Although I've driven MT a good number of times in the past, this is my first MT car too, so I know how you feel.

To tell you the truth I didn't do that but I did something related. I shifted at 5k since I'm still in the break-in process.. to get across the bridge fast because there was a nissan sentra tailing the **** out of me, which got me pissed and there was a huge truck in the other lane so I shifted from 2nd to 3rd to get by the truck fast then I attempted to shift from 3rd to 4th but ended up doing that samething what that rsx did... kinda stupid in my part... but prolly won't happen again...

It's called a short-throw gearbox...it's actually a good thing, you just gotta learn how to drive your car (no offense, don't mean that in a rude way)

do the double pump that some racers do.
pop to neutral, then pop to desired gear.

dont grip your stick. Palm it and just let the stick guide you.
