Im doing as much research as i can to allow custom user tunable maps and datalogs to be created. this would seem like an important tool to the puzzle as per the manufacturers description of the product.

it is very inexpensive and seems it can be combined with other innovative products, such as their wideband for example which would give us a more precise air fuel ratio logger than the factory sensor if it is wideband capable. this data can then be used to create a custom map when the chance/hardware becomes available.

anyone have personal experience with this OT-1 ?

We use Dearborn Group equipment (DPA III+/MH) so I have no experience with that particular unit. However, the capabilites are the same, i.e., it's a CAN bus analyzer/data logger. Since I have a "certificate of completion" from the Dearborn training center, I can talk a little about the device you're looking at.

They allow you to monitor the vehicle sensors in real time and log the results for later analysis. You can use the logged data to determine what changes are needed to improve engine performance. Of course, this requires that you understand the data you're looking at, understand how your engine is configured and know what mods to make in order to achieve your power goals.

Sometimes the data is a bit cryptic. For instance, pressures (fuel pump, fuel rails, etc) are measured in kilopascals, not PSI, so you have to know how to convert the units of measure in some cases. Remember, the CAN bus is essentially a German creation (Bosch) and they use the metric system.

The parameter IDs (PIDs) can also be tough to decipher because, although many codes are standard, many are vendor specific. Something like P1350 might mean something to a Ford mechanic and mean something else to a Nissan mechanic. You have to read it as P13xx where P13 might mean ignition system but the xx is vehicle specific. EVERY vendor I work with has their own set of proprietary codes and some are pretty **** about keeping them secret.

This unit will not allow you to "tune" your engine. You'll have to buy a flash device to do that and it's not likely that your local Infiniti dealer will loan you one. I'd bet Technosquare wouldn't loan you theirs, either.

You'll have to know EXACTLY what you're doing if you're crazy enough to try reflashing an ECU by yourself. It doesn't take a huge mistake to destroy an engine by messing with the ECU programming. Leave that to the pros like Technosquare.

Although we have the ability to reflash ECUs, we never do for obvious reasons. I've never connected our system to my car although I could easily do it.

CAN bus story:

There was a tech from company X that made extra money after work visiting truck stops and dialing in a bunch of extra HP for the truckers. It didn't take long before drivetrain failures started happening. They took their trucks in for warranty repairs, company X figured out what the problem was, located the tech and fired him. As I understand it, the warranties were voided and the truckers were SOL.

Is that more than you wanted to know?

hahahaha thanks for the detailed explanation, exactly what i figured it would be.

ill be ordering it within a few days and write a review on it for others to understand how it works and what data im able to retrieve from it.

Instead of writing a report why not post the link to the manual. I thought it was a pretty good beginner's intro to the CAN bus. It doesn't get into the details of how it really works but that would be information overload for most folks anyway.

I think you'll find it an interesting toy for a few days and then it'll gather dust on the shelf. You might be better off getting a cheaper unit from Autozone or Pepboy's.

I have three test sets and 5 or 6 protocol adapters of various flavors in my basement office and have never hooked them up to my cars. To me it's kind of boring. I run a lot of tests for work but we use the data in a different way, not for tuning or performance work.

hmm well... all i do everyday is assemble race motors and tune them on the dyno... so looking forward to the world of VQ motors.

The impression I get is that the OP is throwing out an idea for a useful way to data log the car in on overall effort to get a custom map from a third party tuner with which to load via a soon to be release piggyback ECU access device. In fact, this thread was hyperlinked to the thread that referenced that device. The vendor, Cobb, of that device suggested providing data to his tuner to get a custom map for the device.

Those interested in Cobb could pool in for the best data logger available and pass it around via Fed Ex to get data to the tuner for a custom Cobb AP tune. Eventually.... , it would collect dust, but then, so does everything else.

Well, now. Didn't know you were an engine builder. I'll bet you're not 16, either.

Do you have any plans to compete with Technosquare? A Hondata type system would be great, just plug in to a PC and tweek that puppy right in. I would have done the Technosquare flash by now but I can't afford the down time.

Once you come up to speed on the VQs maybe you could recommend cams, fuel system upgrades, etc. I could scare up a few K$ to do something like that. I don't want to pressurize this engine but I'd like to put around 350 HP on the ground. Am I dreaming?

I actually dont have no need to compete with technosquare since my customer base is entirely not nissans, but i am very eager to become a dealer of his. actually i especialize in hondata and kseries motors, something of that nature for a G37 would be awesome. I also have tuned AEM EMS for a few years. this whole flashing thing is the new faze lol

I can get 300whp from a 4cyl.. i dont see why 350 isnt attainable from a healthy v6 such as the VHR.

hopefully the VHR gets great aftermarket support and great cams and intake manifolds get developed, but of course it all comes down to having a vehicle that is easily tunable, thats when the aftermarket support skyrockets. and thats the speed bump were trying to overcome with the G as of right now.

Makes sense. Good luck with the CAN bus logger. Hope you come up with some ideas that go beyond the usual bolt on stuff. I've bolted on the whole Stillen kit but I'm not sure what to do about cams and the fuel system right now. I'm open to suggestions.

I still miss my JRSC/Hondata GSR. The baby would fly. The guy that bought it couldn't wipe the grin off his face.

Update!

Well guys picked up the new OT1 unit last night from my trusty parts guy, which might i add gave me an excellent deal.

today is installed the software and read the entire manual, making sure there was nothing that i wouldnt already know. its pretty straight forward. after the logworks is installed, it installs the programmer and all the OT usb drivers.

*the CD came with logworks 2.05 or something. there is already a 3.0+ version available, dont know why they didnt include the newest one on the cd, but you can download it from the support page on the innovate website, which is what i did and installed the newest software (which i may add looks 10x better than the last one!!)

once you plug in the unit into the OBD port which is located right by the hood release lever, it lights up (car on or off) then i connected the usb cable to it and my laptop and let windows recognize it and install the drivers. once thats complete you can open up the programmer (you cant have the programmer and logworks running at the same time, they both share the same com port and only 1 can work at a time.)

the programmer is basically sets up the OT1 unit so it knows what to log and how to do it. the menu setup with the tabs is pretty straight forward. this is where you select how many channels you want to log. (i noticed you can select the channels but that amount gets negotiated with the ecu, something i noticed, you dont get what you select but if you keep choosing a higher number the ecu lets you have more. i only need 4 at the time being.

now you move onto the logworks and once you connect the gauges become alive and show you the streaming data. which was very fast and pretty smooth.

My main concern is to prove just what exactly the ecu does to the Throttle DBW, that is the sole limitation were going to have with the car being its not something we can just easily mod and adjust to our liking. so my 1st test was to prove exactly just what the ecu does and put an end to the myths!



if you notice where it says "TPS" i pointed to the peak of the red graph which is peak throttle and you see parameters on the far right corner.

this was a 3rd gear pull started at 1500 RPMS, right about the 4 1/2 second marker on the bottom. pull lasted to about 6500 rpms, i thought i had enuff space to redline but definitely did not. had to cut it short.

unfortunantely the ecu controls our asses!! LOL.. i hit pedal to floor at 1500rpms, and was only given 25% until 2000rpms which them i was blessed with 86%, by 4400rpms it was down to 81.9% and by 6500 it was 79% and seems to have flattened out and i definitely dont see it going any higher by redline. i would assume it will stay at 79% until redline or worse. (until next session)

i was impressed by the timing given by the ecu which is pretty decent timing advance, started off at 32adv and went down a little bit and averaged 28 and 29 the rest of the way. so it sure it taking use of the 93 octane lol.

so there you go guys, excellent logging tool, im going to be playing with it a lot more and find out everything i can about what the ecu is doing behind our backs. and figure out if the factory o2 sensor is wideband and just how rich the motor is running.

I'd like to see what that Blitz throttle controller does to the TPS trace and also see if the timing trace follows changes in TPS.

Could the Hondata be modified to work with these ECUs?
