What gear do you top out at for city driving, (6MT)

Well no wonder everyone is crying about MPG! I'm in 6th as quickly as I can shift through the gears. If I want more power for passing, the clutch is the pedal on the left and the gear shift will downshift from 6th just like it upshifted to get there. I'm in 6th the majority of the time unless I'm going really slow. I downshift to accelerate when needed.

I am not complaining about gas mileage at all. I get 17 mpg with almost all city and then some back road driving and get 26-27 mpg on the highway going above the speed limit. That is good gas mileage for a car that weighs that much.
I am surprised that the car actually gets the estimated or better in some cases. I think I could get 30 mpg if i kept it in 6th gear at 65mph on the highway.

Ok, I tried to drive in 6th today on the city streets, and it was just brutal to say the least. I can't stay in 6th for more than a few seconds due to the constant slowing down, or downshifts needed to pass some lagger in front of me, I just couldn't deal with my G feeling like a sled lugging in 6th.
I thought 5th was acceptable at speeds above 45 or so, but to me 6th really feels like a complete exaggeration, with no real point besides trying to conserve fuel. In fact the need to constantly downshift is probably burning more fuel than when I just stayed in 4th or 5th at all times.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying driving in 6th in the city is wrong, or that nobody should do it, this to me is one of those "different strokes for different folks" scenarios. You will always get mixed opinions with neither being right or wrong. Ohh well, this was interesting at any rate

Ok, I will make this easy for you guys. You should stay in the gear that gets you between 2 to 3k rpm for the speed you are traveling if you want to save fuel and have some power. If you are close to 2k or under, you are not saving fuel because your car has to work harder. If you are over 3k and close to 4k you will have more power but tend to burn more fuel. This is how you should think about it: I know most of you have ridden a 10 speed bike. Now we all have started the bike out in the highest gear (the one for high speed) and you know how hard that is. You exert more energy starting out in this gear or riding in this gear if you are not up at a higher speed. That is why you always started out at the lowest gear and worked your way up. You always stayed in the gear that did not cause you to waste the most energy such as peddling in first when you should be in 4th. Peddling faster in 1st caused you to waste more energy. This is the same in the car. You want to drive your car in the happy medium.
So again, look at the rpm that you are driving in and try to keep it between 2 to 3k or close to that and you will be saving some gas. If you are in 6th gear at 40mph then you burning more fuel because your car must work harder. You can accelerate from a stop in 2nd gear and 3rd gear if you want in the G37 but it causes the engine to work harder and burn more fuel.

There is some truth here. Anyone who bought a 600lbs + car with 330hp that takes 93 Octane should not be overly concerned with gas mileage. You can also cut off your AC to save gas. I didnt buy this car to get great gas mileage. I bought the car because it is sporty, has good accelerations, and has all the luxury items you could want. The 17 - 27 mpg I am getting is great considering the hp and weight.
If you are really concerned about gas mileage then get a lighter car with a smaller engine that is more fuel efficient!

Excellent explaination, probably explains why my MPG were no better when I tried to keep the car at 2k or below a few months back, all I did is completely give up any kind of driving pleasure and got nothing extra back in return regarding MPG.
