Why would anyone bother trying to increase the octane rating? The higher the octane, the more stable the fuel is at higher compression, which prevents pre-detonation, engine damage, and wasted fuel, so putting higher octane fuel in your car than it's designed for or it is tuned for sounds like a waste of time.
Also, assuming it is true that temps drop in your exhaust from a higher octane fuel, that would also theoretically reduce the efficiency of your cat, wouldn't it? Your cat needs the heat to help burn up the crap that will get you a "fail" for emissions.... Also, again assuming there is any truth to the lower temps in exhaust, that probably means might mean that your engine is wasting more fuel and burning less since heat is a byproduct of the combustion of your air/fuel mix. Less heat might mean less was burned.... and I could go on and on..
