My last oil change was performed at the dealership. They told me they only use conventional oil. WTF? I believe this engine has a very high rev limit to run conventional oil, that combined with the 120 plus degree weather we have here in Arizona. Any advantages/ disadvantages for running full synthetic? I'm thinking of running Royal Purple. Has anyone used Royal purple in any of the VQ engines?

I used Royal Purple many times in my G35 with no problems and a friend of mine, thats all he puts in his Maxima and that thing runs great for its age.

I put royal purple in my 00 civic si and it ran great. But I recently switched to 0W50 Fully Synthetic Eneos oil for my G. I think it may run better on this oil than on royal purple. But thats my opinion. Royal purple is cheaper which may be the upside to it. Cuz Eonos oil costs about $9-$10 a quart. But Royal Purple is good too.

Actually, RP has not measured well in oil analysis for the VQ engine. There are Z guys who claim his engine show more wear using RP than his peers using other types of synthetic. Interestingly, Motul and RP which are well known but have not measured well compared to other type of synthetic.

On the other hand, Mobil 0-40W, amsoil TSO, German made Castrol syntec 0-30W (not the US made) have done well on the VQ oil analysis.

I currently have RP 5-30W and the engine does run a little smoother, but most people think that RP does improve the performance but not necessarily good to wear and tear.

What is the fascination with Royal Purple? It does poorly when tested by analysis. The entire marketing strategy is shade tree mechanic TV and magazines, bolstered by preposterous testimonials and trolls who come on car forums and claim smoother, faster, better MPG from an oil change. What a bunch of suckers that buy based on that.

Stick with oils that meet the BMW LL spec. They have top high temperature, high sheer performance and last well during extended drain intervals. Some examples besides BMW 5W-30 synthetic are Mobil 1 0W-40, German Castrol 0W-30 (NOT Syntec 5W-30), Amsoil Euro 5W-40. There are others, you can check the specs on the bottle or the internet. By the way, no Royal Purple grade meets the spec.

As for the OP, synthetics are in every way better and there is no negatives to using them. Stick with the good ones, change them every 7500 miles (longer if you really believe and understand) and the rest of your car will fall apart long before anything inside the engine starts to wear.

Another brand of oil that does well with the VQ is Schaeffer but probably very hard to find a local dealer.

Not to get off topic, but what oil are you guys seeing used at your stealership?? My first oil change they used Castrol GTX, which I believe is pretty good stuff, at least for a regular, non synthetic oil. I am going to find out what synthetics they offer for my next change. I will bring Mobil 1 if I have to, never heard a bad thing about Mobil 1.

Conventional will work fine. If you're changing your oil every 3750 miles, it's pretty pointless to run synthetic anyway, it's more of a waste of money. A good conventional oil will perform just as well as a synthetic for those short oil change intervals.

But hey, it's your money. If putting synthetic oil in your engine makes you sleep better than night, then by all means, go for it.

BTW, if anyone thinks otherwise, please post some used oil analysis results as proof.
