Slowing down is the best gas saver ever. Also accelerate smoothly and steadily; use the accelerator pedal as if there is an egg underneath it you are trying not to break. Drive at a steady speed rather than accelerating and decelerating a lot. Many of the poor mileage claims are from drivers driving the car hard because it's so fun; until you have to fill up that is. Brake early when coming to a stop and coast to the stop rather than keeping on the gas and then abruptly braking. Reduce any unnecessary weight from your car. Keep your tires porperly inflated or maybe a pound or so high rather than low. Keep the car properly maintained (oil, air filter, etc.)

Something that I noticed that helps me is whenever I'm on the freeway and there isnt too much traffic, I turn on the Cruise Control and watch the mpg meter stay pretty steady between 23-28 mpg, depending on my speed. Believe it or not it increased my mpg drastically because I didnt have my heavy right foot on the gas and accelerating constantly...

I was actually going about 55 mph on the freeway on the way back from Vegas... Traffic was flowing at about that speed so I figured i'd see what i'd get... The little MPG-ometer was one block from being all the way up... Not sure if its exactly 28 mpg but either way I was pretty surprised... Drove like that for about 15-20 miles...

I get pretty decent fuel economy doing city driving when:
• I accelerate slowly and steadily up to no more than 3k before shifting
• I skip gears if I happen to be going downhill so I can keep the rpm low
• I try to keep below 2k rpm in 5th gear as long as the engine isn't struggling (forget it if you're going uphill)
And pretty much everything Black Betty said.
