When conserving fuel I shift at about 2.25k....in fact the shift from 1st to 2nd at about 2k since it feels like it requires less for a lug free shift. Our cars have enough torque at the low end to shift into 2nd at a 5mph+ roll so sometimes i keep the clutch partially engaged after starting in 1st and then engage it again right away at 2k for the shift into second. sounds weird but if you try it you'll see it's pretty compatible with the car.

reason i do that is because higher rpm shifts from 1 to 2 are usually jerkier if you are relaxed and clutching slower. its just my n00b experience.

The issue here my friends is tourque. In a higher gear with all things being equal with such low (relativly) rpm's the engine is no where near its prefered operating cycle. It will work from just about any gear just not up to its full potential. To lose the shudders try giving a little, which is ideal. AKA Heel, toe shifting. But what do I know, I've never driven stick in my life.
