DIY: Adding dipstick to your 7AT
#76
This still has me very curious.
Here's what I plan on doing. If I'm able to take the TOP off of this, then I have a vacuum pump I can snake down there and suction out a good amount of fluid. Then I plan on filling it back up with the exact same amount. Easier and cheaper than bringing it to the dealer for a $250 flush. I don't care about the dipstick b/c I don't think I lose any fluid anyways so its not a concern.
Anyone else do a transmission fluid change this way?

The drain plug is the easiest way to remove trans fluid. As far as replacing it, yes you can take the cap off to do it but not braking the bolt is the key. If you go through all the trouble of getting up in there to remove the cap then I would definitely install the dipstick. If you don't have AWD its a lot easier to access the cap.

I got one off of ebay. did a search for "2008-2013 Infiniti G37 Coupe Transmission Dip stick w/ Dipstick Tube" there isn't one available at the moment.

good news for those looking for parts
I just bought the dipstick and pipe assembly brand new from blackhawkjapan.com. got them, installed them. current cost about $80. it took them a few weeks to ship and 1 week to get it. (I'm west coast)
some points
1 - i had to hacksaw off both parts of the lower bracket on the pipe assembly because there was a wire bundle that was in the way. a little fiddly but no big deal. obviously, do NOT hack off the wrong one. just test with the dipstick, and see which end clips.
2 - wrong part warning, i searched for the o-ring seal 31084-20301 on blackhawkjapan, and did not notice the search result was for a different part from toyota, so i bought 2 rings i can't use. make SURE the search results are what you searched for. i don't think blackhawk has the o-ring seal
3 - My methodology for getting the pipe assembly into the transmission assembly was to tetris it up from below, pull it down into the hole partway. then from above, i shoved it down and bolted in the upper bolt. Then went back down and put on the lower bolt into the transmission. given how well the top bolt holds it, you may not even need the bottom bolt.
4 - if you're worried that you dropped crud into the opening during install, just do a pan drain, drop, clean, and fill before you drive. heads up, even after a drain, there is a cup or more of fluid still in the pan. i got my gasket for the 09 G37 7AT here https://www.z1motorsports.com/auto-t...t-p-13672.html
5 - consider eye protection. lots of crud, glad none got in my eye cuz of my glasses.
good luck!!

As a alternative to blackhawkjapan, I have used amayama.com for most "hard to find parts" over the years with no issues. More often than not, parts that are listed as "discontinued" or "NLA" here in the US are still available in Japan.
Just tossing out additional alternatives...

Shipping a dipstick is $26.00, so it's $34. I'd rather not give my CC info to Japan. I was robbed of $24,000 in crypto from a Chinese company and nobody can do a thing about it. I changed all my emails, credit cards, bank acct numbers....They got everything!!! Saved my cash, but lost my crypto. US gov. won't even respond to my report. I got 3 cell numbers, crypto addresses, and a website link, but no response from anyone in the US. Wrote 6 reports. The only people who are trying to help is FINMA and the Swiss gov. contacted me 5 times as it routed to a Swiss account. I'm not giving info out of the US again. Ever!

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Understandable. Myself and others have been using amayama and Blackhawkjapan for years with zero issues.
But. Your wallet, your decision. Have to respect that.
Good luck either way.

It's nice to know that info. Thx. I tend to trust everyone, but it has gotten me in deep poop over the last few years. I'm trying to keep my funds in the US these days, but it's great to know they are reputable.

Normally, I would agree, but I am also a cheapskate. Plus, as these cars age, parts availability here in the US is dwindling. As parts become discontinued, or "NLA" here, they are often still available in Japan.
For example, when I needed to replace my exterior A-pillar trim pieces, as well as a few other body-colored pieces, they were available from Japan. Not here. Plus, even with international shipping (DHL or FedEx) the costs for most parts are cheaper than here at US sellers. We have to pay the "Infiniti tax" which doesn't exist overseas (even worse for the GT-R).
Either way, you appear to have a good head on your shoulders and am confident you will find a solution.
Ok, back to topic...

I was noticing the dipstick of an 08-09 G37 5speed auto and it uses a dipstick.
There is a spacer between the trans and the dipstick. The trans hole uses 2 M6 bolts that the spacer bolts to and the dipstick bolts to the spacer via 1 m6 bolt. Without the spacer the dipstick will feel like it doesnt fall into place. This spacer is important for proper fluid level. 1/4 of an inch in the pan could be 1/2+ quart.

i have noticed that the fluid level (when filled according to fill plug and closed when overflow starts breaking stream) is artificially high on the dipstick.
do you know the part# for the spacer and the m6 bolt?
