Clear coat looks white almost. Is that normal?

Hmm doesn't sound normal to me? What kind of clear coat are you using? Does it look white, or just kind of frosty?

Wow that looks awesome, good job and thanks for the DIY

I wonder if someone could modify this to make GTR style tails with nightshade. It would only entail cutting out circles for the LED parts, I assume.

Maybe I'll give this a shot and see how it turns out. Can they be sanded back to OEM finish?

I actually thought about trying that since I had GTR style overlays on before doing this. I decided since the circles aren't prefectly round and different sizes it would be too hard to line up and get even on both sides.

It should sand off back to oem. you'll just need a good polishing compound to restore the finish in the plastic.

Great write up and result!! thanks wakeboard, one question, on the final polish, was it by hand or with a machine??? I'm doing GTR style, so anybody else who wants to do that process., FYI, you MUST use fine line tape from a body and paint supply

I did the polish by machine with my porter cable. It could be done by hand, it'd just take a lot of elbow grease.

Not what I wanted to hear since I'm on this step now.

Update, this turned out to be a dissaster for me on the first ONLY because apparently the clear coat that I bought was not good. It was Krylon and it turned out looking white! Not sure what is up with that and if I just got a "bad" can or not but it sucked! I sanded it down and tried to go from there but should have started all over again. After I sanded it only took off a little clear coat and by the time I put on a little more shade they turned out too dark. So, it was so bad that I had to get the thinner out and strip it all down and start from step 1. Better now but looking forward to the polish to get the shine.

Note, do NOT do it like I did or the 2-3 hour little project (not including the 24 hour drying) will turn into at least a day.

Sorry to hear man. You must have just gotten a bad can of clear or something. Are you sure it was clear and someone didn't switch the caps on it at the store with a can of white or something?

If you don't have a machine to polish it with you could probably just take it to a body shop or detailer or someone and they could polish them up for you.

Done...turned out okay...wish it was a little lighter but wanted to make sure I had a couple of nice coats on. I put a ton o clear coat so it's nice and "safe". Thanks for the inspiration wakeboardr116!

How many coats of NightShade did you use on your lights?

I just did one medium to pretty heavy coat. I was planning on doing 2 light coats but the first one started darker than I was expecting so I just ended up with one heavier coat.

Just be careful man...go too heavy and you won't have lights! I went with 2 medium coats and did like 3 clear just because painting is fun but if you go anymore then you're running a risk at being too dark. Have fun! Oh, and I didn't have a polisher at the time so I went to the car wash at had them wash it and talked the guy into helping me out with buffing the lights and then it was all good.
