Getting ready to paint my grille
I went to autozone and got some duplicolor adhesion promoter, black paint for plastic, and some high performance wheel clear coat. I have a brand new grille I picked up on ebay that i'm gonna do it on. So do I need to scuff up the chrome or anything on the grille first or can I just spray the adhesion promoter on and be fine? Here are the steps I plan to do.
-scuff the grille first (if needed)
-wipe down with alcohol and let dry
-spray 1-2 coats of adhesion promoter
-sand with 1000grit to clean up over spray
-wipe down with alcohol and let dry
-spray 3 coats of black
-sand final coat with 2000grit to clean up overspray
-wipe with alcohol let dry
-then spray with 5 coats of clear and let dry for 24 hours
so does this sound alright? anything i missed or should change?

Ok. I talked to the guys at autozone and they said the adhesion promoter is better for plastics. Its pretty much primer for plastic. Also, I searched around and people said not to sand the plastic too much, otherwise it will look uneven. Just to scuff it up alittle to give the stuff something to bite on.

K, I got the grille all scuffed up and wiped down but I have a little problem. Its only about 50 degrees in my garage with a space heater going and doesnt look like it will be much warmer tomorrow. Will it be ok to paint this cold? (im gonna turn the heater off during painting, i dont wanna explode) The can says it goes down to 50 but just am not sure.

you should be using 600 wet/dry or even a scotch brite red scuff pad to prep the grill. there is absolutely no need to sand in between the adhesion promotor and basecoat--you will remove all the adhesion promotor by doing so. absolutely do not sand between basecoat and clearcoat. 50 degrees is not a good temp to to be painting. wait for 70 degrees and up.

I also googled around about painting in cold temps (since its only gonna get colder for the next few months.) and found some info. My garage is at a steady 50. Here's what I did for the first coats of adhesion promoter and it seems to have worked well. Warmed the paint cans in warm water then sprayed the grille and waited a min then hit it with a hair dryer on low heat. Then brought it in to a warmer area to finish drying. So far is looking pretty good.
