DIY: Changing manual transmission oil
#31
Quick bump for a good DIY!
I see that you only bought 3 quarts of the transmission oil? Will that do or should I buy 4? I know it's 3 quarts + 4 oz but it seemed like you only bought 3 quarts? Does the 4oz come from the OEM oil that was already there?
I'm looking to purchase the oil today
Thanks!

I guess that I had 4 quarts and maybe just only put 3 in the picture for some reason. It's hard to remember from that long ago.
You should drain the old oil out completely as possible.

Yeah, thanks. I'm going to buy 4 quarts just because it requires 3 + 4oz. You never know if you're going to spill some anyway.
I've read a lot about what are the best oils and Amsoil has come up on top on a lot of tests and reviews. I'm going to place my order directly from Amsoil today.
Thanks again!

I just did this yesterday. I used Red Line MT-85, and I am pretty satisfied. Shifting feels smoother (but that may just be placebo effect, who knows). Thanks Black Betty for an awesome write-up , this only took me 20 min with the help of a lift.

Quick question. I'm thinking about getting some Royal Purple Max Gear for my manual tranny. How good is this product? Is it mainly the name we pay for? (like overpaying for Bose speakers? ) I'm about to get 4 quarts and really want to make sure it's good stuff compared with Amsoil, which OP used.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Anyone else strip any of their drain plug? Mine was in there pretty tight and i guess i didn't put the hex key/socket in there properly. My G is up on jack stands at the momentawaiting new drain and fill plugs.
Also, when I opened the fill plug fluid came out, probably a 1/2 quart or so. Anyone else notice this? Car was level.

Just followed this tut to change my oil, thanks Black Betty.
Couple of observations. Hopefully, they will be useful to other diyers.
1. Old transmission oil smells terrible..
2. I pumped 3 quarts exact. The amount of used oil drained was around 3 quarts as well.
3. The 10mm Hex bolt can be difficult to remove due to the compression of the washer. I used a cPVC pipe to extend the hex wench, to get more torque. Once the initial torque was overcame, you can unscrew using hand.
4. Once the old oil drains ~95%, it will start to trickle down the exterior of the transmission. So if your drain pan is not big enough, it will get all over the floor, so adjust drain pan position accordingly.

FYI - A lot of 350z/G35 owners have had issues with top quality aftermarket MT oils.
I personally just tried the same Amsoil Black Betty used and I am disappointed. Shifting has become harder and rougher. 1-2 shift is hard, especially in the cold.
Many of us have reverted back to OEM and found it to be much better and smoother. Hopefully you guys don't have the same issue. I would stick to OEM.
