Question Removing Stock Shift ****?

I'm sorry if there is already a thread about this...I have tried searching and can't find anything

Does anyone have a DIY for taking off the stock manual shift ****? I am trying to put on a new one and don't want to mess up the OEM one in case I need to put it back on for some reason...thanks to anyone that can help!

Doesn't it just unscrew like all the others?

I haven't put a ton of torque on it trying to unscrew it, I didn't know if there was some other way to do it and accidentally damage it in the process

auto's are the ones that are different.

The first time you unscrew it is the hardest.

okay, this is what i did to remove mines and it work "without destroying my stock shift ****".

tools required:
vice grip(medium size one)
BELT oil filter clamp
radiator hose to wrap around where you gonna put your vice grip at
second man!

put your hands into the shift boot and lift up. you'll see a zip tie, cut it then wrap the radiator hose around the shifter so you don't damage your shifter. after that, use your vice grip on the inside. clamp it as tight as possible. then use the BELT oil filter clamp on the ****. one person holding the vice grip and one person holding the BELT clamp and turn vice versa. worked for me and didn't damage my stock shifter. Good Luck

o yeah, lefty loosy righty tightty.

theres a 90% chance that you will strip the leather off the ****, thats just how it is sometimes. In my case however, I asked my dealership to just loosen it so that I could take it off myself which they did with no damage what so ever to the ****..best part about it was that they were suppose to charge me $30 to do it but they forgot to put it in the bill

I personally dont think that step is necessary, Its just a precautionary messure.

Just wrap something around your shift **** or itll get destroyed.

I'm pretty sure the vice grip is so that you don't torque the shifter linkage and end up bending or breaking it in the process. From what I've seen, it requires a LOT of force to unscrew the stock shift **** and if its enough force to strip the leather off the ****, then I would be worried about it damaging the shifter linkage as well.

I just finished taking off my ****.

I popped out the console, pushed the boot up, and then clamp my vice grips over the shaft with a hand towel underneath.

After wards, i used my hand to unscrew the ****. THough it was a PITA, i was able to remove the **** by hand without any damage done to the **** at all. I wonder why people are using pliers and messing up their oem **** when you can just use your hands a little bit of elbow grease.

When I took mine off, I HAD to use pliers b/c there was so much lock-tite. I'm quite confident in my ability to unscrew something like that lol but there was no way it was moving. Some G's have more than others, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it

x2. It took my friend clamping from the bottom and me pulling with both arms on top...and it still took a ridiculous amount of time. It wasn't going anywhere by hand.
