DIY: Stillen Gen3 install

Stillen Gen3 install

I got my new Gen3 intake and let me tell you this was a pain in the a$$ install. This is why I'm not a fan of stillen products, The fitment was poor and I had to push and prod to get it to fit right. The fujita intakes bolted up way easier than this and they fit so much better. Only reason I switched was hopefully a CF TS hood is coming soon so I didnt want the filter exposed to rain directly. Well here you how I installed it:

1. First removed old fujita intake, which btw is for sale so PM me if your interested. I had to remove my engine cover and strut bar half way through to make it easier so just do that from the beginning

2. Remove the front cover that blocks access to the radiator by using a 10mm socket and flat head screwdriver

3. After the screws are removed use pliers to squeeze the clips out of the plastic cover

4. Now set aside the cover and u'll have an opening like this

5. Now remove the front bumper by removing the two screws (one on each side) in the wheel well, then just pull on the front and the clips will come out. I didn't want to remove the bottom screws, due to my splitter, so I just did the top and placed towels between so it didnt scratch the rest of the car

6. Next I used a dremel to cut the openings big enough to fit the piping through.

7. Next install the top tube that connects to the throttle body. This was annoying as hell, the claps didnt want to fit over so I had to work with it and I had to cut the rubber tubing that connected to the side openings to make it shorter

I didn't like that the tube rested against wires in the engine bay, the fujitas never did this:

8. Next connect the lower tube with the rubber connectors. Again lots of pushing and prodding was needed to get it to fit right

9. Connect the bracket to the 2nd to the top hole in order to mount the splash guard

10. Next put the filters on and tighten with a flat head. After this you have to install the splash guard and it will only tighten so far by hard and you have to squeeze a wrench in there and do 1/8 turns slowly which takes forever but finally it will look like this:

Other than the 5 hour install because it didn't fit together well, it feels good driving it. I like being able to walk towards the car and see it in the grill too. I think the quality was much better on the fujitas though

Very good write up. I think I rather spend $200 or so and have performance shop install it.

Nice write up, but that dremel job looks like crap. When the Gen 3 was installed the whole opening for the dremel was done with a perfect circle.

This is a 40k+ car, treat it as such. I was very hesitant on even getting the Stillen intakes just because of the modification, and for that I took it to professionals.

The right way to do it is to get different size hole cutters from a hardware store and start small to large. I wouldn't take a dremel to make a perfect circle.

I'd like to see someone try and make a perfect circle for those tubes to fit in without getting into the sheetmetal

What pissed me off when I installed them is that if they had bent the tubes a bit differently then the whole set up would fit like a glove. I'm not a fan of a setup that has the tube rest on the AC lines when it didn't have to. The drivers side tube sits higher than the passengers side and then you have to cram them into the center bracket that isn't even in a good position for connecting the filters. When I get some time, I plan on fabbing up a custom center bracket that positions the tubes/filters in the correct place and support brackets and dampeners to secure the tubes properly so that they don't rattle and bang against the engine bay. Why the heck don't they have a support mount around the middle area of the tube? Its like 4 feet long, hanging out in space... like mine, its only a matter of time before its starts to sag.

xeroed , Did you not see the picture with the holes? My Gen 3 sit perfect with no engine rattle or signs of sagging.

No, I saw the picture.... Did you cut into the metal support around the inlet opening to allow for a circular hole. But circular hole or not, I took out as much material as I could and still could not position the tubes in such a way that they did not hit the inner wheel well and the AC line on the drivers side AND let both sides connect to the center mounting bracket all at the same time. The tubes don't hit my cut holes. just everything else.

I'd like to see more info and a close up on the holes of pfizzle. I'm seriously considering the Gen 3 intakes, but the holes from VIP G and the installation issues are making me a bit uncomfortable. I have lots of hole saws and am generally pretty adept at paying attention to detail.

I interpret VIP G's concerns are not the situation for everyone but is this a common problem?
