Wax vs Sealant on OB
#16
my car came with paint protection from the dealer (i paid extra for it) the company that did the paint protection for me told me that i would never need to wax my car. the paint protection is supposed to fill in all the microscopic pits found on clear coats, moreover, it will protect agains acid-rain and droppings. so then i asked what if it wears out, they said it wouldnt and that if it does start to look dull, i can take it back to the dealer and have it re-applied.
.
my question is to the professional detailer here, is this remotely true ? is there such a a product ? or did i simply pay way too much for a lifetime supply of sealer ?

Here's a thread from Autopia you might find intersting.

Just curious but run you hand along the paint and see if it feels smooth or does it feel gritty or rough. The trunk was the worst I'm my car before claying, try there. Before they do anything to your new car they would first need to clay it. If your paint surface doesn't feel like glass you were screwed.

Okay so I guess I'll be doing both. If I recall correctly, sealant twice a year and wax 4-6 times a year would be fine, right? My car is mostly garaged anyway.
Other than being faster, are there any other benefits of applying with a PC versus by hand?
the dealer offered this to me too, but i turned it down as well.

I've used Menzerna FMJ and topped it with Pinnacle Souveran on my OB. Both products are easy to apply and remove by hand or with a PC (Porter Cable). Looks great, no complaints on the depth of the gloss and shine. I thought the car looked darker when I applied the Souveran over the FMJ.
For the next round, I'm going to use Pinnacle Souveran by itself, no sealant underneath. I've heard there's a huge difference in the look of a car with wax by itself vs. the sealant/wax combo. I'll have to see for myself if I like it.

I'd much prefer sealants over carnubas mainly because it lasts a lot longer. I once had a detailer detail my car with Zymol, and although it did seem to give the paint a little more depth, the difference wasn't that extreme.

Well here are the major points I've picked up from this thread so far:
- Wax provides better protection, but doesn't last as long.
- You get more of a wet look with wax.
- For wax, carnauba is the way to go.
- Waxes bead water much better.
Well I was hoping sealant would be all I'd need, but if applying both is really worth it, then I guess I'll do both. Now it's a matter of getting off my lazy *** and ordering both, as well as a PC, and doing it.
Thanks for all the tips!
