Buying a car out of state and bringing it back to Texas

So I'm planning to head up to Oklahoma City to trade in my G35 for a G37 at a dealership. I know I pay the taxes when I bring the car back to Dallas, but my question is how much will I pay in taxes? The last time I bought a car from a private seller, the Department of Public Safety went off of KBB value rather than what I actually paid. Will I have to pay taxes for the value of the G37 or would I pay taxes based on what I paid after trade-in provided that I show all the paperwork from the dealer?

In my experience 2x you will pay KBB when bought from out of state because they haven't collected any tax for that vehicle. When you buy in state they normally do bill of sale which you can control that by numbers hint hint... At least that's how it is in Tennessee.

Doesn't matter what state you buy it from you should pay tax on the final amount owed. So new car minus trade in value equals taxable amount. The tax percentage is based off off where you live. You should get a check for that amount from the dealer to give to your DOT.

If it were me I would check with the local DMV

I would also check with a local dealer how much they would charge to handle the transaction and get your plates.

if you get a bill of sale from the dealer then you should be paying taxes on that. I just purchased one in GA and drove it back to register in FL and only paid taxes on what i actually paid for the car which is a fun 6% here

if you are paying cash try to get the money wired rather than check to the dealer so they can do title work and give you the title before you leave
