$42,000 CASH!!!!!!! Brand new off the showroom floor with 14miles. Being young and stupid I couldnt pay intrest on money I had avaiable just so I could make payments. But lesson learned and I will prolly never buy a brand new car again. Altough I still feel like leasing a vehicle isnt the way to go. Just my personal opinion and alot of people think otherwise. But if I ever decide to sell/trade/part-out my car I would have to go with either a vette or supra for my toy car. I have a 2008 chevy silverado 1500 crew cab as my daily driver.

My rule of thumb is...my car payment + Insurance should be less than 15% of your take home pay.

Anything more than that...i am not comfortable.

Anything over $500 for me is unreasonable. Not because I can't afford it but it just doesn't make sense to me. That s on a lease or loan.

I know this is way subjective as budgets vary, and income levels vary, but just curious what you consider "just way too much" for a monthly payment on a highly depreciable asset like a car.

I think anything $600 and over is when you need to shop cheaper.
This is a loaded question, as the monthly payment also depends on how much you are putting down. For me, I won't lease for more than $500 per month. I will pay what I have to so I can get my 36 month lease down to $500. CC for mine is $48500 and the invoice is around $47000, without the navigation, but I was told that a car can't be ordered with out the navigation if you get the sport package.

Now the countdown is on to get my ride. This will be a long 3 plus months.

I pay $369 tax included and $110 a month for insurance, got two tickets in a row and my insurance jupmed to $180 but now its back to $135 from farmer. I'm 21 and soon to be 22. I bought the car as a birthday gift for myself. I think anything more than $400 a month is out of question

Matt - it's not meant to be a loaded question. When I say monthly payment, I mean how much are you willing to pay per month for the car? Down payment or trade in is assumed.

My car payment is around 10% of my take home pay. I really wouldn't go any higher as I'd like to put money into other things like saving.

Like I said, that depends, but if you are not considering trade in or down payment, I would say $500.

I can lease a 2011 coupe for $498 a month with just the first payment down, and that's 12k miles nothing out of pocket but the first payment. You guys think that's a bad deal?

A Silly Question, Actually...

Your monthly car payment should always be predicated on a percentage of your income after living expenses. For some, $350 may be stretching it. For others, $700 is not a hardship.

I think anything over 450 For a lease is crazy because if you buy the car out with 6 years payments with a msrp of 45,000 it comes to about 640 a month and its your.
I wouldnt pay that much money for leasing because your renting it

I don't like having my payment over $450 a month (just car payment). So, it may sound stupid to most people, but I just put down enough money on the car to get my payment under that. I know I could have kept the cash liquid...blah blah...but just a mental thing. I know I can afford that payment...and I know I'm not good keeping money in the bank for too long sitting there. hehe
