trade-in vs private

Im in Canada , Im thinking of buying the 2010 g37 . Currently drive 2003 g35 Sedan M6 . Im not sure if i should go for the trade-in or just sell privately. The car is in good condition with 128k on it. Normal ware and tare issue . Recently got the 126K Maintainance done and was told front and rear sway bars need to be replaced , Estimated cost $500c . Any Input would be appreciated.

If you are going to buy another Infiniti I'd look at what the dealer will do - there is a small advantage in the US where you pay salestax on the difference between your trade-in and the new car rather than salestax being paid on both for a private sale. Secondly, almost always you can get more from a private sale than a dealer trade-in - kbb says roughly 8500 for your car on a private sale vs 6500 on a trade-in (US dollars assuming 126k km). You should assume that your buyer will find about the sway bars and let them know up front or have it fixed before selling. KBB in the US is a good guide to the difference in prices - if the dealer will get close to a private sale price then I would save the hassle and go with the trade-in.

One thing to consider is you're in canada. Not exactly the best place for a RWD vehicle. I'm in Minnesota and just traded my '07 G35S for a '10 G37xS. I chose to take the trade-in because I knew that the market for a RWD vehicle in the northern climates is somewhat tough especially when there's fresh snow out there.

I probably could have gotten a better deal, but it would have taken much much longer to get it done, and rather than deal with that, I went with the trade-in.

On the other hand, I got a damn sweet deal in my '07 G35S when I bought it because of the whole RWD in the middle of winter thing

so you just performed the 60k eh?

I wouldn't imagine you getting that much more than the dealership from a private sale to be honest. a 2003 sedan isn't exactly like the coupe... i mean i highly doubt you'll get more than 7500 if the car is worth 8500 and you'll probably be sitting on that car for a while.
