Used 2008 G37 coupe - $7000 below new invoice - Good price?

I found a used 2008 G37 coupe journey at a dealer with premium, Sport, Navi, illuminated kick plates, trunk mat, cargo net, rear spoiler, and splash guards. 15,000 miles on it.

Invoice (new): $40,858
They're asking (used): $34,000 + TTL

Is this a good deal? I've seen people getting $1-2K below invoice on new cars so that would put this car's new price at around $39,000 + TTL. In my mind it seems like the asking price is a bit steep seeing as I could get a new one for $5,000 more...or is this actually a good deal? I'm thinking it would make more sense if it were around $31,000-ish...

The car appears to be in very good condition.

That's really overpriced from what I've seen others on here getting it for. Should be 29-31k considering it has it's used and has 15,000 miles on it. I got an offer for the very same thing except for nav and it's still considered new but has 3,000 miles on it for 35k.

Yea, their original asking price was actually $35,000, they dropped it to 34 when I sent them an email asking for info on the car. Any idea on how I might possibly get them to drop to 29-31k?

Your right Rodzilla, that is overpriced. When I was doing research over the past couple of weeks I was seeing g37/journey/sports offering price between 32k-34k. There are some dealerships that are not Infiniti dealers trying to sell used Gs for 38k with 8-15k miles on it. With 15k miles on the car, you can easily get them down below 32k. My guess would be 31k-31.5k.

Take a very good look at the car and write down any dings, scratches, etc. Ask for the carfax report to find any discrepancies. When you are haggling, bring those up. Also, ask what kind of reconditioning they did to the car. Ask them to pull up the maintenance record for the car. It will show if the past owner(s) brought the car into an Infiniti dealership to fix any problems. If you are not buying from an Infiniti dealership, you can try to call them and see if they will fax that info to you before you go in to look at the car.

Also, try to find other cars for sale with the same equipement and print out the info. When you're negotiating, let him know that you have found similar Gs at dealerships that are on your way home.

Of course... you can always walk away and watch the sales guy scramble.

All of this info can be used as ammunition in the negotiation.

The only problem is the car is 250 miles away so I'm doing my negotiating over email right now...

Apparently the guy who bought it couldn't finance it, so it's back to negotiating for me.

I told them straight up they were asking too much and here's their response:

Price is extremely fair for thiscar. I priced the car with Kelly Blue Book, and it prices out at retail at 35,455. Edmunds prices car out at 36,397. I can sell this car to you for 33,386 plus tax, tag, and doc fees.

Let me know.
I responded with a link to a similar car (2,000 more miles, no nav, everything else pretty much the same) that's being sold for $29,200 and said I don't feel it's worth $4,000 to get navi, I'll see what their response is.

Any advice on how to get them to budge though? I feel like I'm about to run into a brick wall when it comes to negotiating the price on this thing, just based on that email about it being an "extremely fair" price.

Why not buy the car that's selling for $29.2?

It's a Ford dealer and I'd rather buy from an Infiniti dealer. The car isn't in nearly as good condition - it has some dings/scratches, a chip missing on the front hood, and its tires need to be replaced pretty soon; the one that's more expensive is in almost brand-new condition, was previously owned by an Infiniti Corporate Exec, so I figure it was taken better care of. It's also about 7 months older (so 7 months less warranty time)...

And there's the brick wall I sensed was coming:

Navigation is an option that is very much in demand on the premium cars, and Rob, our General Manager has said that at the Infiniti auctions the navigation cars are bringing 4-5k more. Rob just purchased a white G37S with prem and Nav. for almost what I am pricing the blue one to you, and we still have the expense of putting the car through the shop and getting it in superb condition for our customers.

...

Our vehicle is in superb condition, and priced at a very attractive price. It was also driven by an Infiniti/Nissan Executive, so it's short history has been well cared for.
4-5K more for navi? Give me a freakin' break. Any ideas on how to get the price down?

What a joke. Driven by an Infiniti/Nissan Executive normally means its been thrashed for 15k miles. They really think they are selling the cars to idiots at times. Stick to your guns, email them an offer, a final offer, an OTD price that you are willing to pay for that car. If they say no, move on, plenty more out there!
