Instead of paying $7,000 per year in lease/finance costs on a G37... if you paid $3,000 per year on a car and invested the remaining $4,000 per year in an IRA... when it came to retire you'd have $500,000 per year for each year you chose to forego the car bling and invested $4,000! A 4-yr lease could be worth $2 MILLION in retirement (based on stock market 50 yr avg of 10.5%/yr).

Do the young folks understand this? You're not going to be young forever!

Not everything is about money. I personally would rather enjoy my life as I live it rather then save every penny, drive a beater, wait til I'm 65 to retire & then be too old to be able to enjoy any of the money I have saved up. What a waste of life. I'd rather vacation every year, live in a nice house, drive nice cars, and work til I'm dead rather then pinch every penny, save all my money. Besides, all your savings can become worthless pretty quick as you can see with the state the economy is in.

I agree, I was being really frugal with a well paying job driving a beater and it really sucks. You have to enjoy life, you only got one shot at it. I am now shopping for a g37, just saving up for the downpayment.

Reasonable lease deal

I have negotiated the following:
Invoice + $300
No sales tax (normally 6.25% added to capital cost)
'08 G37 Coupe, w/Premium but not much else

$480/mo for 39 months, 15k/yr miles, no other costs (down, security, etc).
Saving sales tax in Texas is like gettingit for $2,000 below invoice. Normally
there is cost to the buy down of the sales tax, but they are covering that.

MSRP is 40,005. Black with Graphite interior.

Thoughts?

You're the poster boy for the poor idiot in "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" As long as you pay your monthly rent (lease) from interest off your investment account then I have no problem with your theory. If, on the other hand, you are making payments from your paycheck (and NOT from spinoff from investments) then you are a idiot... as I first thought!

Dr. (I don't want to keep you guessing. Guess which dad you'll end up? Poor and an idiot I'd say! )

Yes I'm such an idiot... ROFL you know nothing about me. I couldn't care less what the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad teaches. I live my life how I want to, comfortably.

Exactly why are you driving a G37? Why not keep driving your beater civic and saving money?

Quick question... how old were you when you bought your first piece of real estate?

You know Dr. Sumtin Wong wasn't attacking you, right? He was just making a general statement about saving money. Now, I don't completely agree with his point of view, mostly because:

1) As an upwardly mobile 25 year-old, I won't garner a millionaire's respect in a '92 civic. Sometimes you have look rich to become rich. Thus, the G37 will help me close deals that would have otherwise been lost.

and

2) Factoring the same rate of inflation that we've had over the past 50 years (anyone remember when a soda was a nickel?) into the next 50 years, that (supposed) $2 million ain't gonna buy you squat. Use your own notion of opportunity cost to figure out how that money could have been put to muuuuch greater use.

However, again, the nice Dr. was just being polite and giving you financial advice, which he does for a living. No need to lunge at his throat for it.
