your only options are...
-sell it straight up for the buy out amount
-have some approved through the bank it was leased through and transfer it to them
-pay off all remaining payments and then return it
-have a willing dealership make you an offer and you might have to pay the negative equity (ie. they give you 37,000 and your buy out is 41,000....4,000 negative equity)
what are the terms of your lease? (payment?, term?)

Rather than paying all your remaining payments to terminating your lease, try selling the car to a dealer. You will probably have some negative equity on it, but it beats having to pay off the remainder of your lease.

Ok, this is going to be hard. So if I get someone to take over my lease, say from swap a lease, or one of those websites, does the car belong to them fully? If they mess up on payments, will that affect my credit?

call up the leasing company and ask if you can get someones else to take over your lease.

It's a 24 month Lease, $479 monthly payment. I live in NY

Your other issue will be resale value which, I'm sure you know right about now with the rising costs of gas, is horrible. If you have a payoff to GMAC or another bank, odds are you're upside down.

You could sell it quickly to Carmax, however the nearest one to you would be in CT I think.

I actually avg about 17 mpg.
