Some states allow dealers to charge a documentation fee that allows dealers to cover the costs of processing the legal paperwork that is needed to register the car and process the title. For example, I had to pay a $99.00 in Indiana when I purchased my G37. Usually this fee is non-negotiable.

They tell you "everyone pays it".
$99 is reasonable, $299. is excessive.
Tell them to give you something of equal value and you'll pay it.
The best time to do it is at the very end of the deal.
Clear bra for 1/2 price, mats, tint, etc, you don't get what you don't ask for!

Most dealers in CT charge $299, which should be against the law. I've called dealers out of state and got quotes for $45, some $99. That's not bad, especially if the price is good but $299 is offensive.

I just ordered a car for invoice, actually my invoice number is actually a little higher than theres. Based on that I did not complain about the fee, but I may ask for some tint as the time draws near.......
