Akebono bbk clear oem 18 wheels?

When I was looking to upgrade my brakes with Akebono BBK, I couldn't get a definitive answer if BBK will clear OEM 18" Wheels.

Unless I am reading the measurement wrong, with the 15mm spacer installed, I have 21mm of clearance from top of caliper to back of spoke/wheel. I have 55mm of clearance for the rear. For the front wheel, if I substract the spacer, I should have around 5-6mm of clearance, yes? Would it be safe/wise to remove the spacer?

This is on a 09 G37xS (awd) sedan. Akebono bbk kit includes caliper, stoptech drilled/slotted rotor, and Posi Quiet brake pads. I also purchased, SS (stainless steel)brake line, Motul high temp brake fluid and 15mm H&R DRM spacer.

There was no waiting area so they drove me to B&N. Waited 6hrs and here is the end result.

Those with stoptech rotors, do yours look like this? All the pictures I seen have black hats. Mine is silver which I am ok with. Note the arrow in the picture. The rear rotor has some sort of slot to it and front rotor has some sort cut angle to it. Thanks

Here's the F & R templates for Akebono clearance. I've heard the 18" S wheels have about 5mm clearance at the closest point so that sounds about right w/ your wheels. The CZP site says to allow at least 2mm clearance when using the template so you should be OK w/out those spacers. I was wondering why you needed them w/ those wheels (thought maybe the X models had different offsets, but it doesn't look that way). The templates don't list X models, but probably just an oversight

I had this done at a shop. I brought the spacer JUST incase and told them only install it if caliper didnt clear. They told me caliper didnt clear . Plus they charged me extra $50 for installing the spacer. I am out $50 plus cost of spacer . Should have worn a cap to cover up SUCKER thats written on my forehead.

Spacers are not needed for those wheels. you only need spacers if you have the 07+08 18" sport wheels.

To add insult to injury, I tip the mechanic $40

No wonder my a$$ was hurting when I was driving home. I thought the extra piston in the bbk add more hp and my butt dyno was feeling it...

Thanks guys!

Just need to figure out if these are stoptech sport rotors (not the aerorotor) or some newer version. I contacted vendor yesterday night, awaiting reply. Just need to figure if vendor replaced it with equivalent rotor (power slot/centric) or was it the shop "mistakely put on wrong set". When I first got them I did inspect them but cant remember how they look like...

Where did you purchase the kit from? I ordered mine from CZP and the kit looks exactly like the picture. I don't believe the rotors in the picture are stoptech.

I've seen numerous members here with BBK + 18' sports wheels without issues. I'll install mine next week however they will go on with a set of 20" Vossen.

50$ Just to install your spacers? Since you stated you have the DRM series spacers which basically just bolts on....What did they charge you to install the brakes? Even if you didn't need the spacers. When/if you lower the vehicle it'll sit perfect because you have them already now.

Takes about 4-5 min. per spacer, at the most 20 min for a whole set of 4.
Yours was just the front right? So at $5/minute that's $300/hr labor, YOWZA!!

Not going to disclosure where I purchased them before I figure out if it was the vendor or shop that swap the rotor. I just need to confirm absolutely that these are not stoptech rotor. Thanks for chime in.

PM-ed you. Thanks again.

I am on the fence on doing future mods given this experience. I am not mechanical so have to depend on car shop to do the work. I can't spot/notice irregularity when it comes to car parts. Its like most men can't spot a fake Coach/LV/proda..etc bag but if you give me two same size memory chip, I can tell you which is a better grade

Thanks .

I am hoping my thread help those in similar situation. When I was looking to do this upgrade, I couldnt get a definitive answer for my setup. Everyone been very helpful and replied back, it depends on the wheel, spoke, offset..etc, although true and useful info. I dont know how to process that info. I brought the spacer just in case and vendor said I can return them if dont need it.

I even did researched on the shop I used and they were an hour away. After the job was done, the owner stuck his hand out, with "Paid up sucker" tattoo on his hand..I was like how did he know my name...I kidd . All kidding aside, I was like whaa, thats not the price you quoted me. He said, they had to install the spacer because caliper was hitting the wheel and that was not in the price quote. He said the mechanic had to shave of something. I was like no way man, I did my homework and I shouldnt need the spacer but I brought if just in case...I even told the mechanic that...blah blah blah. I didnt know any better and the fair person I am (aka sucker), I paid up. Now that you guys confirmed and I measured the clearance, I am going back to get my $50 plus the tip I gave to the mechanic, otherwise

Stay tune for the rotor story.

Anyone wanna chime in and reconfirm these are NOT stoptech rotors.

P.S Already PM vendor and emailed, so waiting to hear back...hopefully get a reply back after holiday.

Good luck man, you put a lot of effort into getting those calipers just right, they dinged them up, charged you out the wazoo and possibly got what you may not have ordered. What a fiasco
You might want to post your location and see if any other members here can give you some good shops to do business with in the future. Hate to hear stories like this

Even though mechanic said, he bedded them, I did it 5-6 time from 60-15mph (instruction says 8-10) as that all I can do given the location. The akebono caliper was not even warm but the rotors was hot. Not glowing hot but felt enough heat that if I were to touched them I would burn my hand. I could hear the sound of cooling metal. I get braking will cause heat but could this be a sign of inferior rotor with 5-6 hard stop. I also brought motul brake fluid. Any way to check if shop did put in? I am looking to give autox/track a try this summer. Thanks
