Blown driver rear tire sidewall!

Driving along yesterday and I heard a fairly loud POP from the area of the driver rear tire, come to find this along the inside sidewall. This was the factory Potenza RE050 on the stock rim. Only had about 1000 miles on it because I put on aftermarket wheels right away. I was going about 50mph through a freeway interchange. You guys think this is a product defect?

Possibly defective but impossible for me to say with any certainty.

I have the other set still, just put on the stockies for a couple days to wash the volks and get some pictures of them. Might be worth dropping by the dealer to see if they would consider it a warrantee thing?

I have 30k on the car but probably only a little under 1k on the stock tires, but I dont have a way to prove it. Regardless wear and tear would be the tread wearing down, not the sidewall blowing open right?

Take it to a local B-Stone dealer and have them inspect it. Any manufacture warranty can be exercised by a local dealer.

Wow. That's crazy. Good luck.

I'd follow Neal's advice.

When were the tires manufactured? Could be old tires or low tyre pressure.

Old tire is a possibility, but judging by the location of the rupture, I'm leaning towards defect. Don't normally rupture at the knuckle, unless you're abusing the tires.

I just had a similar experience with a rear tire looking almost exactly as yours. My TPM light came on while driving on the highway. Not wanting to stop on the highway, I pulled off the next exit. Just before pulling off I felt slight vibration in rear. When checking the tire, it was very low and I could smell burning rubber. Not sure if the separation was the problem or caused by running with low or little tire pressure from something else. Rim is OK.

I am due for new tires as I'm almost at 60K, although I use winter tires as well. Winter tires on the car now, and will look for deals on summer tires over the winter.

To the OP, what was the final resolution of this issue?

So I did bring it to a bridgestone dealer, a tech came out took a look. End result was that they didn't want to do a defect claim, saying it was my fault. Apparently they thought I was running it with low pressure causing heat damage and failure.

However, in fact, the air pressure was fine before it blew. I did have to drive it about a 2 miles slowly to get off the freeway and to the closest gas station auto shop. Had my spare, but I left my wheel lock key at home, and my car is too low to tow. I tried to say that I did have to drive it flat, but it was AFTER the tired failed.

I don't know what I would have to do prove it, but the end result was that they wouldn't help me... Took it to the Infiniti dealer too, but they said go to the bridgestone dealer... back to square one...

When and where did you buy your G37? since you had aftermarket wheels did you just have your stocks sitting in the garage or outside for a while? Sometimes after just sitting out for w hile they rot as well.

That's the catch, you drove it flat. There's now no way to see the original damage.
