So I hit a curb today and scratched the wheel a little and ripped a chunk off the tire. Is the tire still ok like this or is a new tire recommended?

your fine. that's a tiny tear. only time you really have to worry is if a huge chunk comes out and you can see the threads of the tire.

Any damage and you're running on borrowed time. Now the weakest point of the tire, it won't take much to fail in that area.
