Optional 17" tire size.

Hi guys,

The current stock 17" tires are 225/55-17. I'd like to upgrade to a wider size. Discount Tire gives 2 options:

235/55-17
245/50-17

The later option has similar height with the stock size ( ~123mm) but tire selections are limited. I am afraid the former option will make the rims look even smaller

Btw, what do you guys think of the General Exclaim UHP? Are they any good? From what I've read, they seem quiet, handle well, are cheap. Negatives include soft sidewall, louder noise when it gets older (I think most tires are noisy when they are worn).

Please share your thoughts. Thanks!

If the 245/50-17 says it'll fit you're rim (which I think it would) then they should be fine. That is a harder tire size to find. Discount Tire was dead on for sizes when I ordered from them.
I don't know about the General's, I have no experience with them. I run Kumho's.

Thanks for your response.

I am not sure about the 245/50 because I don't know if it's a little stretch for the stock rims (17 x 7.5). It's odd that Discount Tire says 235/55 is OK but nothing about 235/50 since they all have different rolling diameters than the stocks.

I kind of like 235/50 because it's a bit wider and sits a little bit lower. Can I put them on without any problem?

Thanks,

Here's a link that was posted some time back by another forum member...
Custom wheels, car rims, truck wheels - WWW.RIMSNTIRES.COM
I'm thinking 245's, but all the "+0" tire sizes should be the same height, only tread width should change...
Tire Rack is a sponsor here and has given good advice about this in other threads.

Only other size we show is 245/50-17. Will fit fine and there are a few good choice tires in that size.

Hi Neal;

Hopefully enhancing and not hijaking the thread... :-)
Of the 245-50-17's, which would give the least road noise, best ride... can that be done without giving up performace?

Thanks Neal and Bob.

Yeah Neal, can you please give us some comments on the tires in that size (245/50-17)? I am thinking between the General UHP and ContiExtremeContact. Thanks again.

Pretty tall order there. Least road noise/best ride would be the B-Stone Serenity. Not quite a performance tire, but still V rated so handling isn't like a sack of mashed potatoes.

The General is a summer only performance tire, the Conti (I'm assuming the DWS) is a performance all season. Two greatly different classes. The General does well in wet and dry, but is a bit loud and won't last as long as the Conti. DWS will last longer, have a/s ability, and ride a bit quieter. Both are on backorder for at least 60 days right now.

Neal,

Thanks a lot for the answers. I kind of like the DWS but it's on backorder. Do you think the Michellin Pilot A/S is worth the extra? I like comfortable and quiet ride without giving up performance too much.

The Serenity sounds like a good fit for me, but it's grand touring so I am not sure... I run Goodyear Eagle GT and think it's not as quiet/comfortable as I'd like but it handles well enough for me.

The A/S+ will handle crisper and hold the dry road better. The choppier tread design of the DWS makes it a lesser tire on the dry. Honestly, ride, noise, wear, etc are all within a tenth or so a point of each other. I would say is it worth getting a tire now, or waiting on the DWS as the factor on what you spend. They are so close in the tests that if they were both in stock I may lean toward the lesser expensive option.
