Nothing wrong with getting a winter beater. I've done it a few times (years ago) simply because I'd rather avoid subjecting my pride and joy to all of that road salt and crappy weather.

The beater Celica I picked up for $300 from a mechanic friend of mine. It was actually in perfect mechanical condition, although the body had some rust on it. So I drove it through one of the worst winters in New York history and then sold it in the spring to another friend for exactly $300.

I bought a new 4Runner in 2004 because I needed an SUV for camping/kayaking/mountain biking/getting up to my winter cabin etc... (I'm into a lot of outdoor activities) and a 4wd 4Runner was perfect for my needs. So even though I was never an SUV guy, I really came to appreciate the versatility and utility that comes along with owning an SUV. And as a side benefit, the 4Runner has an AMAZING 4wd system...it's virtually unstoppable in snow of just about any depth. I've actually pushed through snow that was up to my headlights last year in Lake Placid after a blizzard. It's really incredible how well the 4wd system works on the 4Runner.
