Thinking of lighweight rims to improve performance....

I read the article too - made me think twice about dropping a ton of cash on some forged wheels.

They tested 5 different rims from top of the line RE30's to cast Axis wheels. The difference in price and weight was very proportinal with the Volks being the lightest and most expensive, Zigen was in the middle, and Axis was heaviest and cheapest.
There were different tests done to determine the effect of each wheel while keeping as many variables consistent as possible (car, tires, psi, etc.) They timed each set on a figure 8 course, rotational deceleration (done on a dyno - got up to 30mph, and let free roll down to 5mph), an acceleration test (0-60 or 1/4 mile - can't remember), and a density test.
Anyways, the difference between the Axis and the Volks were very small for the street set-up / occasional track car that my G is. In fact, the Volk barely beat the Zigen that was 1/2 the price. More important is the distribution of the weight of the wheel - if the most mass is in the center near the hub or on the outside nearer the tire.
With all that though, I still like the look of the volks, the name and strength they offer so I might still get them - but am not expecting noticable gains from weight savings...

sedans ARE lighter than coupes because coupes have extra bracing on the sides due to no middle support.
go for some strong 1 piece forged wheels. volks, gram lights, advans are all good companies to check out. check the vendors here, on g35driver.com and my350z.com for some pretty good deals. you can get good deals on 18s and spend less since 19s are bigger and tires cost more.

One thing to keep in mind about the modified mag article. The difference in weight was only a few pounds (20.9 for the heaviest vs. 17.x for the lightest.
I'm thinking about goign from 30lbs infiniti rims to 17-18lb volks.

True, but you could also get something different for much cheaper and have the same effect you're looking for..

I personally am a fan of the SSR type Fs. The 18s can get up to 11 inches wide. They are not as light as some of the Volks. But, pretty damn good either ways.

Sometimes lightEST is not always the best. There are a lot of lightweight wheels out there that would bend. I also would agree with forged > cast.
To the guy that said 19 x 10.5 CE28 weighs 17 lbs. Did you shave 3 lbs out of your wheels or something? Because from my sources, and the internet, it seems that the CE28N in that size is more around 21 lbs.
