4-Wheel Active Steer

Is it really worth it? More that can go wrong / break or a true performance enhancement?

pass on it. it limits your choice in aftermarket parts, atleast for the 06-07 it does.

yea i think its an option with the sport package? correct me if im wrong. it helps though from what i heard, but limits the aftermarket. my buddy has an 06 and he couldnt get the exhaust he wanted because of it.

you may have problems selecting plus-sized wheels later on down the road. pass on it.

Although it provides for a quicker steering ratio and "better" initial turn-in based upon what I've heard, I'd not choose it because of potential aftermarket add-on limitations. It also is one more mechanism that can go wrong. I won't be ordering it on my order for the new car, and will stick with Premium and all other options w/o the 'steering-rear.'

Unless you are going to seriously track this car, pass and use the money on something else.

I thought it was more of a daily convenient feature rather than track performance upgrade?

Either way, it's a waste. I hear its hardly noticeable (never driven one), and overpriced - strait from my salesman.

Thanks guys. I won't check the "4 wheel steering" option. I was also considering things like alignment issues, tire wear, mechanical problems, limitations on tires, exhaust... with the 4 wheel steering. The trade off between "improved handling" and other issues seems not worth it.

Best Motoring Magazine ran a slalom between the regular and a 4WS 07 G35 version and the 4WS was slightly faster. But I agree with others here that it's not worth the extra performance.

I also considered getting the 4WAS when I ordered my G37, but decided against it.

4 wheel active steer!

This featrure is a handling enhancement option! Which is standard on all sport model M35/M45. For 07 the changed the name to 4 wheel active steer instead of rear active steer. Just like on the 06 Coupe it was called rear active steer pkg, but because with this package you get a different front steering gear ratio they decided to call it 4 wheel active steer for 07. If you don't periodically drive through the mountains or on a grand prix track, the average joe will never appreciate this option. As for myself I would get it! Even on the M there are many M owners that have do a numerous amount of bolt ons and rear active steer has not affective a thing.

Although this thread is significantly old, I can attest that it is a great option and has no impact what so ever on steering or aftermarket options.... its a much safer system since you have better control of the car, especially in an emergency lane change maneuver or parking. (The steering input ratio is increased so you dont have to turn the wheel more), I wouldnt consider it a waste at all But maybe not worth the extra money to some ppl. I love it!
