Spinning lug nut and stud

My neighbor asked me for some help changing out a broken front end link on his kids G37X.

Got the end links swapped, and when putting the wheels back on, one of the lug nuts/studs is just spinning. My first thought was the decorative cap was stripped, so chipped it off to gain access to the actual lug nut. Now I see that the stud is spinning with the lug nut. How the heck do we get this off? Thinking to take the 4 lugs off, pull the wheel out as much as possible, and try to get needle nose vice grips on the stud. Or, drill the stud out--it looks to be holding on by only a couple threads. Any other suggestions?

Assume the stud will need replaced. What are the chances the hub is damaged and will also need replaced?
