Am I Being Taken?

Hey members!!

Background:
2013 G37x Sedan. Conversion to BBK.
Parts:
Akebono BBK New
Items from Rockauto -
CENTRIC 11742053 (117.42053) Disc Brake Hardware Kit
CENTRIC 11742054 (117.42054) Disc Brake Hardware Kit
CENTRIC 95042012 (950.42012) Hydraulic Hose
CENTRIC 95042503 (950.42503) Hydraulic Hose
CENTRIC 12642100SR (126.42100SR) Rotor
CENTRIC 12642100SL (126.42100SL) Rotor
CENTRIC 12642101SR (126.42101SR) Rotor
CENTRIC 12642101SL (126.42101SL) Rotor
CENTRIC 10513470 (105.13470) Brake Pad
CENTRIC 10513460 (105.13460) Brake Pad

Okay, I believe the pads, which are Posi-Quiet Ceramic come with the necessary hardware. To be on the safe side I ordered separate hardware kits. They're cheap and I don't mind extra.

I made an appointment for Friday, November, 6 to have it all installed. The new sales guy (they didn't have one before, but the owner is overwhelmed with business) lets me know that I will need additional hardware. I say 'I don't think so, not only do the pads come with hardware, but I ordered extra just in case'. He responds something along the lines: 'in all my years of blah, blah, blah'. Bottom line, is he thinks I will absolutely need his hardware all for a special price of $360. Not a typo $360... He then says if we don't need it then cool, it will be refunded since I had to give him my CC # so he could order the stuff.

For those who have made this upgrade or have some knowledge please chime in. I have gone through every brake thread here, called Stoptech/Centric to talk with a tech, cruised the entire web, I have done weeks of research and am 99% sure I'm right. But what I don't have is experience and am relying on the myG37 team's experience in lieu of my own.

If you got this far thank you very much,
Sean

The cynical side of me is thinking that he's trying to pad his margins.

The gear is being shipped to you? When you bring in the car, take a look at his special hardware and compare it with your stuff.

Thanks Drew. He's getting the gear. And I do plan on making the comparison when I get there.

I'm trying to push back my own cynical side. Until the sales guy got there, I had complete trust as I only dealt with the owner. Everything was free and easy. The owner never once tried to sell me anything. He only presented options for me to choose from. Losing that trust will be a complete drag. I enjoy this hobby for rest and relaxation, as soon as I have to start looking over my shoulder, it loses something of the enjoyment.

Tha sounds like BS to me. Cant you do the swap your self? The only hard part would be bleeding the system. I would assume its not different than doing brakes your self?

I certainly can make the swap myself. It would take some time and a bit more infrastructure like a one-man-bleeder and some brake-specific wrenches. But up until now I had complete confidence in the shop and techs for fair pricing. I don't mind paying good money if I feel I'm getting something in exchange.

Fair-$$$-for-Fair-Work.

I'm very curious what hardware involved w the upgrade costs $360..you covered all the bases w your order. As long as they're fine w reimbursing you..still fishy and sounds like in all his years he hasn't done' an akebono upgrade on an infiniti.

Nothing else is needed, unless you're paying for his jack, brake bleeder, and "special" lube.
I'd DIY if at all possible, you may even have a member here that's close by and can lend a hand.

Thanks guys. That's what I was after.

I can walk in there Friday with full knowledge and confidence knowing that I don't need the $360 in parts. They will have to return them and charge back my card.

I hope the salesguy's lack of experience is talking and not his 'justify my job by bringing in $$$' talking. I like this place and hopefully they can win my trust back because the techs do have skills and an attitude that I value.

We'll see. But I will be damned if I throw in another $360....

Finally, another thanks to Brad. The thread he created got me this far on a budget. I called the dealer about an unrelated matter and they indicated that they would be happy to do the brake upgrade for around $4500.00.

360$ in extra parts? Did you have him give you a print out of what "extra" parts are needed? You should have came here to ask first before you handed over your cc. I'm afraid he'll just try to make up an excuse to justify your extra 360$ cost now.

The only variable would be the dust/splash shields, they may try to sell you new ones + the labor to install those. A simple trim is all that needs to be done to your current OEM shields w/ some tin snips, might even be to your advantage for you to DIY that piece of the job. Check this link for details on doing that, and this DIY is a good one for showing you how easy it is, this one is for an older 350z so it involves using adapter brackets so yours is even easier. I still say give it a shot Sean, we're here to help
Install Akebono Big Brake Kit on 370z or 350z
BTW, what are they asking to do the install (without that "extra" $360)??
**I tend to agree w/ quakeroatmeal, once they have those parts they may try to talk you into needless upcharges. If it makes you feel better get a list of those parts or even a pic of them and post on this thread, tell them not to work on your G until this gets another look.

I made it very clear that if the parts are not needed, he is to return them.

No he just read off the pins, springs, etc. I know that he got them from the Infiniti dealer hence the cost. And I suspect he got twice as many as needed. Instead of one set for the front and one set for the back. He probably got one for each wheel.

But you make an excellent point. On Monday I will call him for the list and see what he gets....actually, I'm going to tell him to cancel regardless. If it's going to cost that much more then I'm going DIY. That's ridiculous.

The more I post about this, the more like a noob rube I feel. I'm usually better than this.

Thanks. First thing Monday I will get a list and post it. Then 'WE' can decide. They won't get my G until Friday so we have some time. If things get sticky I will have CC company intervene.

Thanks again blnewt and all,
I really appreciate all the help.

At least you're not in the middle of the job, or the job has been completed and then discovering extra add-ons.
The best thing about a DIY is that brakes are a regular service item, and knowing how to do your own brakes as far as changing pads, flushing the fluid, and inspecting/adjusting will save you plenty down the road and you'll know the job was done right since you were there for every step.
I'm sure you already feel somewhat obligated since they ordered parts for you but this truly is one of those DIYs that you'll pat yourself on the back after it's done and be glad you did it
BTW, if you do your own brake bleeding the sequence listed in that DIY link I posted above has the order WRONG, the correct order is passenger rear, driver front, driver rear then lastly passenger front.

Thanks. I sorta feel obligated, but frankly, they can send the parts back and credit me if they are redundant as we suspect.

I'll get the parts list from him on Monday and I'll share it, but it might not even go that far.

I'll have them do the install (minus the unneeded parts) and call it a tough lesson learned.

You make an excellent point about doing the DIY and the skills and knowledge that come from it. Also, it's fun and that's the reason I like this hobby. I'll be more DIY in the future for those reasons. (Except custom headlights ).
