Brake wear

After having a '04 G35S in which the OEM pads wore out in 20k miles, I was expecting to have to replace my pads when I started to hear squealing from the rear in the morning when backing out of the garage. I have close to 29k miles on the car, so I figured I'd go ahead and buy the pads and flush the fluid as well.

Was going to take it to the dealer for installtion, but the price we agreed upon was changed, so f*** them, they lost my business forever.

The guy who does my alignments also does brakes, so I took it to him and got a great deal.

Enough babbling and on to my point-- He called me to tell me the rear brakes still had almost 50% left to go, and the squealing I was hearing was because they were glazed. I told him I was fully expecting to spend the money anyway, so go ahead and do the work (going with stop tech street performance pads and blue brake fluid so I am anticipating better performance than OEM). It is incredibly refreshing to deal with honest people in the automotive industry. This guy just earned ALL of my suspension/alignment/brake work.

Nice to know that the sport brakes last quite well, too. I drive 'spirited' so I use my brakes quite hard and only used half of them at 29k? Sweet.

Damn, brother, that's unreal. My wife's old Civic needed new brakes at 65k. 85k is damn near miraculous, especially for a car meant to be driven.

I realize it was probably wasteful of me to have them changed already, but what the hell... I already bought the pads and fluid and dropped it off.

I'll know better for the future. What I really need is for someone to show me how to do it so I can do it myself.

Technically you can't really gauge if you need rotors/pads based on your odometer, everyone drives different and everyone brakes differently.

I understand that. Since the last G I had was notoriously bad on brakes, I was assuming they were ready to be changed.

It turns out Tire Rack sent me the wrong pads, so he's machining the rotors and putting the old pads back on. I'm just a bit beyond pissed off right now, since I called tire rack and had a representative confirm my order with me for the SPORT BRAKE PADS on the G37 before they shipped them.

Whatever... now that I know the old ones still have plenty of life left (and I can't change them to Stop Techs just yet) I'll use 'em til they die.

I guess that's good?? Save some money so you can go all out on your next rotor/pad purchase. And when that time comes, visit a real G37 vendor and we will be more than happy to help you get the RIGHT parts for a great price. What part numbers did Tire Rack send you?

Yeah, sometimes the Good Lord prevents me from doing stupid things even when I insist. LOL! Not sure of the part number... the boxes are still at the shop.

Yes, I'll run the current setup until they're done and then gets pads and rotors. They said my rotors have plenty of meat on them, though, so it may be awhile.
