Click noise from brake when I back up my car

Hi, all,
When I drive home, I back into my garage quite often, almost 8 out of 10 times.

I noticed that there is a click noise from brake when I do so, almost 10 out of 10 times. It doesn't sound like something is wrong, but it doesn't sound like it's normal either. by the way, i have no problem braking at all. I have been to dealership for few times for oil change, the mechanic didn't say anything about my brake. I suppose they do check our cars.

Currently, i have about 18,000 miles. Model is 2010 G37.

Thanks to all input!
Alex

Akebonos or non-sport brakes?
Either way - there shouldn't be any clicking noises per say. Maybe a little bit of noise when the pads grab (but that'd be more of a squeaking noise)...

eksigned, Thanks for your reply!

My car has non-sport brakes. The sound is a litter louder than brake pads grabbing or engaging which I think should be quite.

Next monday, I'll bring my car to dealership for some rattling noise in driver-side door panel. Something in there is dangling and vibrates at 30-40 MPH. I'll bring this up to them and see what they have to say.

will report back.

Parking brake in the rear self adjusting maybe? IIRC there is a set of drum brakes in the hat of the rear rotors..

The noise comes from the front brakes, though. Plus, I don't parking brake when I back up my car. In fact, I don't apply parking brake at all at home in garage.

I just reviewed this section in the FSM. Apparently it's not what I was thinking. In the old days, you had disc brakes up front and drum in the rear. The drum brakes would get adjusted by traveling in reverse and stepping moderately on the brake pedal. Disc brakes self adjust each time you use them. Disregard my reply above.

As for the noise, I recall reading that this is somewhat of a common occurrence with the sport brakes. Usually when backing out of the garage in the morning, then fine for the rest of the day.

Regarding the parking brake, the school of thought is that if you never use it, you probably shouldn't start now as it may bind up/stick due to rust (although can't imagine there being too much wintry elements in southern CA). If you drive a manual, you use it all the time.

I have an 09 non-sport and I hear that too. I looked it up some time back and wish I could remember where... maybe the owners' manual? It said no problem not a defect, reseting, testing or something like that. (If you have the same thing.)
I'd still have the dealer check it out, after all it's probably covered anyway.

It's not uncommon for a brake pad to be a mm or so shorter than the caliper carrier. As such, when you touch the brake pedal while backing up for the first time, the pad will shift slighty as it grabs the rotor. When this happens, try letting off the brake, back up again and see if you hear it a second time....I'm guessing you won't because the pad is already in the back of the carrier.

I used to drive competitively and the Brembos we used were designed so you could swap out brake pads very easily. As such, you would frequently hear the click sound that you are describing. Bottom line, it's nothing to be concerned about. If it bothers you and you're still under warranty, your dealer could slap in a new set of rear pads and, assuming a tighter fit, the click will be no more. FYI.

Alex, I found this:
"Self-test feature
The ABS includes electronic sensors, electric
pumps, hydraulic solenoids and a computer.
The computer has a built-in diagnostic feature
that tests the system each time you start the
engine and move the vehicle at a low speed in
forward or reverse. When the self-test occurs,
you may hear a “clunk” noise and/or feel a
pulsation in the brake pedal. This is normal and
does not indicate a malfunction. If the computer
senses a malfunction, it switches the ABS off
and illuminates the ABS warning light on the
instrument panel. The brake system then operates
normally, but without anti-lock assistance.
If the ABS warning light illuminates during the
self-test or while driving, have the vehicle
checked by an INFINITI dealer.
Starting"
Not sure this is what you hear, could be?

I had the same thing back in '09 when I bought the '37xS -- it was the rear-axle splines -- there is a TSB at least for the '09's to be tightened down or something, improved but didn't totally eliminate the noise, something for you to consider

Most of the time that noise backing up is an ABS sensor.
