Tachometer backlight problem

I'll give you this, Telcoman: you are consistent.
Definitely no waffling here. I stumbled across this on the NicoClub from three years ago. It's a reply to a tach light out.

I would have to assume it is a LED on a circuit board and if it requires dashboard removal it is probably not worth the cost

Stay below 6k RPM and check rear view mirror frequently.

The tach flickering thing has been happening to me this summer too, but yesterday a cold front came through and it was below 90 the whole day and it didn't happen since. Maybe when it's continuously 90-105* it's more prone to having issues?

Perhaps you might just replace the whole darn thing rather than d*cking around with the individual lights. ![Smilie](https://www.myg37.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

So I know this is an old thread, but my backlights have been failing for a couple of years... I have been searching everywhere for an answer to this question myself: How do I disassemble the G37 instrument cluster? So I decided to document the entire process myself and produce three videos on the removal, replacement of the backlight LEDs, and the re-installation of the console.
Take a look at my video over on my YouTube Channel:

I did notice that you have to go to the Youtube site directly to get to the LED Rework and Re-installation videos. Just FYI...

Dan, thanks so very much for the video links and production. They are extremely helpful.
You mentioned that you would replace the ballast resistors as well with around 25% more resistance, I presume they're the smd's near the driver IC's in your video. Any info on what package they are? I'm trying to put together an order of components prior to pulling apart my dashboard to minimize downtime. Did you happen to measure the resistance when you had that opened up?
BTW, my 2009 G37 Sedan has lost around four pairs of those led's now. The first to go was the fuel indicator, but now most of the tach is gone too. Very frustrating indeed.

Mine too....I live in S. Calif and issue started few years back, portions of tach and sped are not lit, not consistent each day, along with fuel and temp are completely off, not at same time, and not consistent.

Sounds like this might work, please correct me if I’m wrong

I have a 2009 G37S Journey as well. And just recently, at around 39K miles, one of my backlight LED's in the tach has also started to flicker randomly off. It doesn't do it very often, maybe on average a few times per minute. Sometimes it can go several minutes without flickering, sometimes several in a row. It is quick off then on, at around the 7K position. It also doesn't seem to correspond to hitting a bump or any kind of flexing. It can do it just sitting idle at a light. I am not sure, but occasionally, I think another will go off with it.
I expect it is going to get worse. I kinda wish that one light would stay blown, since the flicker is distracting. It is early in this issue, so I don't know if temperature will affect it. It would amount to a very expensive repair. I am too old and tired now to take on major projects like tearing apart and reassembling the dashboard, so this is more of a "me too" kinda post.
It is sad to see something like this happen in a supposedly higher-end car; especially one that is single-owner, very low mileage and garage-kept.
