Trunk Struts

Trunk Struts
Whenever I press the trunk button, either in the car or from the remote, my trunk just unlocks. Is that normal or should it actually swing open? Its annoying when I have my hands full and I have to put everything down to lift the trunk by hand.... Oh and I don't have a spoiler, but I would like one soon. Can those struts be upgraded?

This is something that I would love to mod in somehow. Not that I use the trunk very often but when I see Merc's with this I get really jealous!
The difficult part would be wiring it up to close automatically with the touch of a button.

My audi automatically pops all the way open, but its not from electronics, its more by design of how the lid is engineered. It's a nice feature though and i think its better then those push button type open/close because i dont have to wait for a slow electronic method to open it for me.
As for my G, the struts are def past thier prime as the lid basically just falls shut and requires opening past a certain point before it will stay open. So i have wondered about this myselfa few times. The trick is to find struts that are the correct length and stronger, but not so strong youll be fighting to close it. However if you get strong enough struts you could also be the first catapault mod too

My aren't we a little spoiled. I use to remember when you had to use your car key to open any trunk manually and close it manually and sometimes even use the key to lock it again. Then the more expensive cars like Cadillac allowed you to just close the trunk and it would then screw down the trunk lid nice and tight just like a trash compactor. Now with the electronic key FOBs we can unlock, open, and close, doors, windows, start a car and even shut them off while eating breakfast in the morning. Care to guess how many cars and trucks get stolen while people do this to warm up their cars? I honestly prefer the old torsion springs used to hold open trunk lids and some engine hoods. Some of these struts are pretty expensive to replace on the more expensive car and they are lucky to last 3 years or so. As long as the struts have enough strength to do their job and last a good while, I'll be happy. But having it pop open or close for me at the push of a button or a wave isn't really something I'm willing to pay for or fix in the future.

"My aren't we a little spoiled. I use to remember when you had to walk to get to where you want to go. Some places were so far you just didn't go! Then ford came out with these fancy horseless carriages that would take you anywhere. Care to guess how many people died in car accidents after that? 100% more than before we had cars! I honestly prefer walking 8 miles to work everyday"
Makes perfect sense doesn't it??
I was just wondering if it was normal because my old Honda civic would actually pop the trunk open rather than just unlock it. I didn't think expecting a $50k car to have the same feature as a 20 year old subcompact was being "spoiled" But I guess I should be grateful I don't have to pull start my motor and just keep my mouth shut. Thanks for the input.

I have a set of OEM trunk struts I took off my 2013 when I installed the spoiler. PM me if you are interested. If there is interest I can take the pics with my name and make a FS ad.

Any Solution or Updates
Hi gang, just curious if anyone was able to find a solution. I have the same problem as Tachyon. I have to slide my finger against the tail light to get under the "opened" trunk lid so that I can open it w/o scratching the paint. I would love to find a strut that was a bit stronger to at least lift it halfway or all the way. So, I found this thread and didn't really see a resolution. Thought I'd check in to see if anyone had any updated info.
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!

Yeah I replaced mine and had hoped it would open fully, it doesn't. My old 90's Lexus SC and Acura Legend completely popped open and just figured those were normal features. I really REALLY miss this feature. I think all it would take is cross referencing stronger struts that have the same dimension and boom. Just gotta get used to strong arming it shut.

Nothing wrong with this. I actually prefer it with how often I seem to butt dial my trunk.
I vaguely remember my BMW was the same way. Thinking back on it, I think it was a soft unlock because I remember being lazy and going over bumps to close it instead of getting out the car. I think most luxury cars will not pop open though.

Honestly, I think it's more of a premium feel to the car - on Camry's and other non-luxury cars it just swings open and starts bouncing once it hits the end of its travel, it gives me somewhat of a more secure feeling knowing it's open but just "popped" or however you would describe it.
