Painting the ceiling headliner inside car

I reallyyyy hate the tan color....

I have a friend who had their interior roof (headliner) on his mercedes painted from grey to black. I have to say it feels much nicer inside the car.

Ever since the tan color inside the G has been bothering me....

Its now something i cant ignore (ADD HHD CRAZYMANSYNDROME)

I did some researched but could not find anyone who has done this to their G

Anyone know of anyone? If not ill be one of the first ones to do it and show the before and after pictures. I go on summer break next week so ill be able to leave the car at the shop for a day or 2 while this gets done.

I have also seen a few DIY but for other cars, so i have no idea how to do it myself. Better off getting a shop with more experience to do it for me.

What do you guys think about this change?

you can go to SEM Products Home to get what you need to change the color of your headliner. They sell a spray dye that you can use that is permanent, but if I was you it would be easier to remove the front seats and take the headliner out and do it then re install the headliner. There is also a youtube video to show you how to do it correctly.

I painted mine myself with good quality fabric/dye paint. Came out beautiful and looks much better then tan. I actually changed out my interior to black, I had stone color. Don't be afraid like some of these guys do things yourself. If you take your time and use quality paint it will come out great. It's simple to take apart the headliner, start from the back and sides and work your way to the front removing clips etc.. I've nearly taken apart my entire car, if you need help PM me. You can always have work done, but doing something yourself is top dog.

I don't mind posting them, believe me when I say it looks a lot better when the entire interior is one color.

Anybody know a way to get picture up on the site through the iPhone 5? My laptop is down, won't stay charged

Did you spray your entire interior? I also swapped from stone to black but used OEM panels, I would never trust a spray on vinyl or leather covered panels, the headliner would me cheap to have recovered, however the tan plastic panels will not match. Painting/Dying interior is never the same as OEM or recovering.

***My Opinion comes from working at an upholstery shop for a few years, not just throwing out useless info, and your welcome to your own, but that is not what I would consider a suitable way to change colors.

So then you know how crazy the prices are then for upholstery. I got quotes from 200-530 just to have my headliner done. Not included was the A and B pillars, and the back headliner peices. 200 was from a shady shop which I probably wouldn't of done anyway. Upholstery is crazy high prices unless you know someone who can do it, at least here they are.

And no of course I didn't do the panels, don't assume. I bought the panels, back seats and front. Only the complete headliner and a and b pillars.

You can wrap the headliner in black suede yourself. There are DIY's for this. Or have someone do it.

I never assume I asked, but if you can't afford to do it correct then please don't paint your headliner, or do, and get back to me on how it comes out, the problem with fabric is when you spray it, it becomes brittle and will flake eventually, it is pretty much uncleanable at that point, and you will have to keep touching it up. $200 is a bit high even but I have been out of that loop for a while not sure what materials you are looking for either. If you are going suede or leather then yes it is a lot harder to lay, the OEM style fabric would not be too pricey i wouldn't think, or you can go with the softer style "fabric" that was in older cars for dirt cheap. Just because you can do it cheap, doesn't mean you should.

i see thanks everyone for the info and suggestions

id like to point out that my friends mercedes looks really great, the shop just dyed it.... and the job looks very good.

He also had the AC vents and all that other crap blacked out too

I might just do that i guess.... since his car came out great i dont see why it would be different with mine.

I have painted/dyed it already, as I stated before it came out beautiful. All about what type and quality of paint used. Anybody can attest to that, paint is what makes the difference. Mine did not turn out like you said at all. Still feels soft, I'm sure if over done or poor paint/incorrect paint it would. Like you said, you've been out of the game for awhile, and like I stated I rather do something myself, build not bought. If anyone screws up like you said... "you can go with the softer style "fabric" that was in older cars for dirt cheap".
